A “DREAM COME TRUE” FOR BMW COMPETITION WINNER
03 October 2005 - BMW Motorrad GB
More than 800 motorcyclists entered BMW Motorrad’s www.respect1200.com competition in the hope of winning a biking holiday in California but it was Darren Bull whose name was drawn as the winner.
The 38-year-old from Woking was then flown to Los Angeles, where he picked up the keys to a 163 bhp K1200 R – the most powerful naked production street bike in the world – for a once-in-a-lifetime road trip. Supported by BMW Motorrad’s motorcycle touring partner, Edelweiss, Darren and ten other winners from around the world were treated to a five-day whirlwind trip riding BMW’s K1200 R in picturesque and famous locations such as Sunset Boulevard, the San Rafael Mountains, San Francisco, and on the Pacific Coast Highway. Despite an initial interest in BMW Motorrad’s K1200 S superbike, Darren has now firmly set his sights on ownership of the new roadster that has taken European race circuits by storm this year in the PowerCup series that supports the MotoGP World Championship programme. “I was originally attracted to the K1200 S and went online to order a brochure,” said Darren. “However, it was then that I first saw a glimpse of the K1200 R and thought the aggressive styling was incredible and much more suited to me, so I decided to enter the test ride competition. I never thought in a million years that I would win. “The whole experience was a dream come true and the K1200 R totally exceeded all of my expectations. The enormous amount of power available just blew me away and the handling is fantastic,” he enthused. In addition to the organised road trip, competition winners were also able to explore the performance envelope of the K1200 R on a specially prepared race track, which helped confirm Darren’s decision to buy one upon his return to the UK: “I currently own a Yamaha FJR1300 and since I’ve returned from the trip, I’ve been bitterly disappointed with it. It’s just not as sporty or as exciting to ride as the K1200 R, so I’ve already contacted my local BMW dealership to enquire about buying the bike. Words can’t describe how fantastic the entire trip was, and it’s something I’ll always remember.” The BMW K1200 R is available at BMW Motorrad dealers priced from £9,190 on the road.
