EXCITEMENT BUILDING
02 October 2005 - Moto 1

Excitement continues to build for the Dunlop Moto 1 at Mallory Park in Leicestershire, where World Superbike stars FRANKIE CHILI and CHRIS WALKER will go head-to-head in a five-discipline contest guaranteed to flush out the top all-round biker.

The two-day contest will bring Chili and Walker a variety of challenges to and away from their regular road racing careers, and Walker’s extensive off-road background may prove to be the key to the £10,000 top purse.

But the WSB pair won’t have it all their own way. Fellow road racers Karl Harris, Craig Jones, Stuart Easton, Jamie Robinson and Chris Iddon all intend making their mark, while supermoto aces Leighton Haigh and Matt Winstanley have their own ideas of who might come out top.

The fast men will be trying to establish an advantage as they bid to overcome their limitations at trials; the trials group will seek to grab a lead on the observed sections then do their best on the tarmac and gravel.

In between come the motocrossers and supermoto brigade. They might be good bets for overall success, with Ady Smith and Wayne Braybrook more than capable of holding their own in all disciplines. In fact, Braybrook might just be the dark horse of the lot, though he, Steve Colley and Dan Hemingway might struggle in the road racing.

With the new MotoPentathlon added in for good measure, threatening to mis-match the hopes of just about everyone, the contest is boiling up to be a strong draw with its supporting attraction of exhibitions, fairs, etc. and the renowned Race of the Year on the main track.

The second Moto-1 is at Mallory on Saturday and Sunday October 15 and 16, with the Italian Chili looking to wrest the title away from Britain which took it at Donington Park a year ago via the Isle of Man’s David Knight, who now stands on the threshold of the World Enduro Championship.

Meanwhile, Walker (PSG Kawasaki Corse) and Chili (Klaffi Honda) ride in the WSB at Imola this weekend, running eighth and ninth respectively in the championship. There was mixed fortune for Karl Harris (Honda Racing Honda) in the latest round of the BSB. He was ninth in the second race but DNF race one. Steve Plater (Hydrex Honda) was 11th in race one but DNF race two. Dean Ellison (Slingshot Honda) was 18th in race one and 12th in race two. The final round is at Donington Park in just over a week. Then it’s on to Mallory for the DUNLOP MOTO-1. Don’t miss it!
