AIRWAVES DUCATI CLAIM ONE – TWO IN QUALIFYING AT DONINGTON PARK
24 September 2005 - GSE Racing
Airwaves Ducati riders Gregorio Lavilla and Leon Haslam will start the twelfth round of the Bennetts British Superbike Championship from first and second on the grid, following the conclusion of two sensational qualifying sessions at Donington Park today.
Gregorio claimed his second successive pole position with a lap time of 1.31.458s, having spent the majority of the afternoon consistently improving his time at the top of the time sheets. Leon ran in the top five for the majority of the two sessions, before grabbing the second spot alongside his teammate with his final flying lap of the day, recording a time of 1.31.662s. The pair will be looking to continue their good performances in tomorrow’s 20-lap double header as the team bid to win the Championship in their first season back in British Superbikes. Airwaves Ducati Team Manager, Colin Wright, was absolutely delighted with the results: “I am really pleased with everyone’s efforts today and we have given ourselves a fantastic opportunity for tomorrow’s races. Both riders have battled to get the bike working to their full potential and they’ve produced excellent qualifying laps this afternoon. Their race pace is also quick which gives us plenty of reason to be hopeful for tomorrow’s races”. Gregorio was delighted to follow up his pole position at Oulton Park with another one here: “Everything is working well and I have slowly improved my qualifying performances throughout the season. Since the summer break when we had time to work on the bike and make changes to suit me, it has become easier to get the best from the Airwaves Ducati. I know the races tomorrow will be tough and it will be the same riders challenging for the race victory but I’m ready to fight for the victories I need”. Leon was happy with the progress: “I’m pleased to be on the front row and can’t really complain about anything. The bike felt so much better this afternoon and I was able to get the most out of it. My race times are good and I’ll be looking to challenge for race wins tomorrow. I lose a bit of time in the slow final third of the track but I slowly improved on that during the afternoon and finally managed to put all the parts together for a quick qualifying lap. I hope their will be a big crowd at my local track tomorrow cheering the team and me”. The twelfth round of the Bennetts British Superbike Championship continues tomorrow with two 20-lap races.
