WEST FACES TOUGH RACE IN MALAYSIAN GRAND PRIX
24 September 2005 - KTM-Sportmotorcycles AG
Red Bull KTM rider faces a tough race in the Malaysian Grand Prix after qualifying in seventeenth place during today’s qualifying session at Sepang.
Final qualifying was run in searing 40 degree heat with West improving his best time by one second compared to first qualifying on Friday. West was disappointed not to be closer to the front after setting his best time of 2’10.33s, on lap 14 of 16, in today’s session. Pole position was claimed by Hiroshi Aoyama whose time was almost one second outside the 2004 qualifying record. Track conditions are hotter and dustier than previous events at Sepang and lap times generally slower. Starting from the fifth row of the grid will make the 20 lap race a huge challenge for West, who is keen to again score championship points after crashing out of last Sunday’s Japanese Grand Prix. While the new KTM 250 machine is conceding some top speed to its rivals the team will look at the set-up data overnight to try and improve handling for the race. Anthony West #14 - Seventeenth - 2’10.330 “That’s as fast as I could go today. The handling set-up is pretty close and I was pushing hard. I can make up most of my time on the brakes and with corner speed so hopefully we can improve that for tomorrow, but it is it’s difficult to pass on the straights. I’ve still got some pain in my wrist from the Japanese crash but that’s not a problem. I’ll try for a better result in the race but I don’t want to override the bike and not finish the race.” Harald Bartol -Technical and Managing Director “We will have a look at the set-up but I think there are only small changes we can make, both bikes now have the same spec engine. I think Anthony can perhaps do a little better in the race, some of his practice laps were not consistent, maybe he needs to push more earlier in the session, his times were faster later in the session.”
