RAIN INTERRUPTS PREPARATIONS FOR MALAYSIAN GP
23 September 2005 - KTM-Sportmotorcycles AG

Afternoon rain showers made conditions difficult for today’s first qualifying session with Red Bull KTM rider Anthony West finishing 15th on the provisional grid for Sunday’s race.

Track conditions were unpredictable with conditions dry and dusty for the morning free practice session and then damp but drying for afternoon qualifying.

Italian rider Alex de Angelis qualified on provisional pole position.

West rode with his left wrist heavily strapped after suffering muscle bruising when he crashed in last Sunday’s Japanese Grand Prix. The hard-riding Australian is receiving daily treatment at the medical center for the injury.

The KTM team is preparing a second motor to the latest firing order specification, which team boss Harald Bartol hopes will give West two identical bikes for tomorrow’s final qualifying and Sunday’s race,.

While the engine program still lacks outright top speed in this development year for the 250 project, West is making up for lost time under brakes and with corner speed.

West was faster 0.5s in the more difficult track conditions of the afternoon qualifying session, compared to morning free practice.

“I’ve got a little bit of pain in my wrist, but it’s OK once I’m riding. What I’d really like is a little more speed for the long straights here but I know the team are working hard to fix that, it will just take time. I’m following guys on the straights and then catching them under brakes into the corners. The grip levels were down today. It was dusty in the morning and then in afternoon the track a was but drying out.”

Harald Bartol - Technical and Managing Director

“We are working now to prepare two identical motors to the latest specification for Anthony’s bikes, we are aiming to give him two the same so he is not switching between different set-ups.”
