SPEEDWAY WEEKLY ROUND-UP
20 September 2005 - British Speedway Promoters Association

ARENA-ESSEX promoter Ronnie Russell says that he is working hard on ensuring that the Hammers are financially set up to compete in the Elite League again next year.

ELITE LEAGUE LATEST.

Russell said: ''I am working to maximise the level of sponsorship and advertising for 2006 and I need most of this to be in place before I finally commit to another year. ''2005 has been a difficult season for the club but I am doing everything possible to ensure our long-term future.'' BELLE VUE manager Ian Thomas says the Aces can turn the Play-Off Final around in the second leg at home after Jason Crump kept them in contention at Coventry. Thomas said: ''Early on we were making the gates, and until about Heat 6 we were well in there, but then we stopped making gates and we caught Coventry when they were on fire. ''We had one of our worst meetings of the season, with the exception of Crumpy who was magnificent, and we have a mountain to climb - but mountains are there to climb.'' COVENTRY co-boss Peter Oakes is delighted to be taking a 13-point lead to Belle Vue for the second leg of the Play-Off Final, but insists the job is far from completed. Oakes said: ''We fought for every single point, we had a battle plan and everybody followed it to the letter. ''We now have to guard against thinking we''ve won it, because we haven''t yet. We''ve still got 15 very tough heats to come at Belle Vue, and they will be fired up for it.'' EASTBOURNE promoter Jon Cook is pleased to be trialing a new race format in the forthcoming challenge matches against Poole. Cook said: ''Traditionalists will most likely hate it initially, but that was also the case with 20/20 cricket and we feel this could be just the solution to revitalise the Cup. ''The new race format shows a complete break with tradition and we are delighted to have the chance to be the first to try it.'' IPSWICH star Kim Jansson may miss the end of the season as he needs an operation on his shoulder. Jansson said: ''To be certain of being fully fit next March I want to have the operation next month so that my shoulder will have time to regain its strength. ''I don''t want to let anybody down but I have had so many upsets with my shoulder that I am really keen to have it put right, and Ipswich will hopefully see the benefit in 2006. PETERBOROUGH owner Colin Horton is making plans for a major Open meeting at the Showground on October 16, with a £2,500 prize fund for the winner. Horton took over the Panthers from brother Mick in late May and has seen the club''s fortunes transformed both on and off the track. Horton said: ''It''s taken a lot of effort and money to turn things around, but I''ve had a great response and this should be a fantastic meeting, so hopefully we will get a big crowd.'' OXFORD boss Nigel Wagstaff is concerned about a lack of interest in the end of season Craven Shield competition. The Silver Machine have won their two home group matches against Swindon and Wolves - both in front of low crowds. He said: ''Perhaps the further you get the more interest there will be, but I do worry for the future of the competition when I don''t really see any great interest in the terraces.'' POOLE''S recent signing Robert Kosiecha is hoping to impress enough over the remainder of the season to earn a full-time contract with the club. Kosiecha said: ''I am very pleased to have joined Poole and it is great to get the opportunity to ride here. ''I''ll probably have about 10 meetings and maybe more next year if I do well, but I haven''t set any targets. I''ll just ride and try to learn as much as I can.'' SWINDON will still be without injured Dane Charlie Gjedde for a vital Craven Shield clash with Wolverhampton this week. The Wiltshire club are yet to open their account in the group after defeats at both Wolves and Oxford. Robins promoter Alun Rossiter said: ''I am hoping we can tame the Wolves and that obviously means the lads will have to demonstrate the improved form they collectively showed in our last home match versus Poole.'' WOLVERHAMPTON''S showpiece Olympique individual meeting on October 10 will be sponsored by famous Black Country brew Banks''s. Promoter Chris Van Straaten said: ''Banks''s are famous throughout the country and we''re delighted to welcome them on board. I can reveal it''s a two year deal so they will be with us again in 2006 and the event is now known as the Banks''s Olympique.''

PREMIER LEAGUE LATEST.

BERWICK promoter Peter Waite praised rivals Exeter for their willingness to complete last Saturday''s Premier League match in less than ideal conditions. Waite said: ''The meeting gave us much better racing than was expected on such a wet surface, credit to all the riders who were willing to get stuck in and give it a go.'' EDINBURGH star Daniel Nermark says the Monarchs fear no-one over two legs in the forthcoming Young Shield competition. Nermark said: ''We are all really happy to get through to the play-offs as it means more meetings for us, and I think we have a chance against anyone.'' EXETER boss Graeme Gordon believes the Falcons have under-achieved in the Premier League this year after signing off with a 20-point defeat at Berwick. Gordon said: ''It''s a shame the team didn''t go on to do as much as people thought they would do at the start of the year. Every week there seems to have been a problem to overcome.'' GLASGOW co-promoter Alan Dick feels that reserve James Cockle has stepped up his game in recent weeks. Dick said: ''James is flying at the moment and for him to score paid 16 against Sheffield was an astonishing effort. He featured in 5-1s in Heats 12 and 14 that ultimately clinched the bonus point for us.'' HULL manager Dave Peet has admitted that the Vikings may have to end their season by staging a home match at Scunthorpe - because Craven Park will be unavailable after September 26. Peet said: ''I''ve contacted Scunthorpe as we have to ride our two remaining fixtures or we''ll face a fine, and I''m not certain we can fit both in this week.'' THE Isle of Wight hope to have Danish reserve Steen Jensen, currently sidelined with a broken thumb back in their line-up by next week. Promoter Dave Pavitt said: ''Steen was in a lot of pain after his crash against Exeter, but he reckons he''ll be fit to return by the end of the month.'' KING''S LYNN co-promoter Jonathan Chapman is pleased that the Stars will be away from home in the first leg of their Young Shield clash with Workington. Chapman said: ''It will be better for us being at home in the second leg. Sheffield, Rye House and ourselves probably have the best home records around at present.'' NEWCASTLE star James Grieves feels his move to Brough Park this season has revitalised his fortunes after several years at Glasgow. Grieves said: ''There were no problems between me and Glasgow but I needed to freshen things up a bit, and making the switch has given me a fresh impetus.'' NEWPORT promoter Tim Stone has admitted relief that his injury-hit team have now completed their Premier League fixtures for the season. Stone said: ''Obviously I''m very disappointed that we have finished bottom but it was mainly due to an impossible injury situation.'' READING promoter Pat Bliss is still trying to make a new signing to replace the injured Danny Bird. Racers want a new man in for this weekend''s Cup-tie with Rye House, and Mrs Bliss said: ''I am still searching, but it is not easy.'' RYE HOUSE can clinch the Premier League title this week - without even racing a meeting! The Rockets will be Champions if nearest rivals Berwick lose at Sheffield on Thursday, but if the Bandits win Rye will need a positive result in their final match against Somerset. SHEFFIELD skipper Sean Wilson admitted he was thrilled to be back in the Premier League Riders'' Championship - and winning it! He said: ''I enjoyed it last year in the Sky commentary box, but it never beats riding and winning like this!'' SOMERSET boss Mick Bell admits he will feel some sadness when the club visit Exeter''s County Ground for the last time next Monday. He said: ''It will be sad to go there for the last time because it''s such a unique place and I wish everyone at Exeter all the very best in their search for a new stadium.'' STOKE promoter Dave Tattum said that Alan Mogridge deserved great credit for his second-place finish at last Sunday''s Premier League Riders'' Championship. Tattum said: ''There is no question that Moggo was the most consistent rider on the night and under the old 20-heat system he would have won the Championship.'' WORKINGTON fans will turn out in force to back skipper Carl Stonehewer''s testimonial at Derwent Park on Saturday. He said: ''I want it to be a special night for everyone, not just me. We''ve got some of the top riders in the world coming to the meeting and it should be a great night.''
