WEST CRASHES OUT OF FRUSTRATING RACE AT MOTEGI
18 September 2005 - KTM-Sportmotorcycles AG

Red Bull KTM rider Anthony West failed to finish the Japanese Grand Prix when he crashed out of today’s race at Motegi.

West was pushing to make up for a lack of top speed when he lost the front on lap of the lap race.

It was frustrating end to the weekend at just the fourth race for the new KTM 250 project during its initial development year. Two different firing orders motors were being tested this weekend and team boss Harald Bartol said there was a lack of top speed performance on the straights.

Starting from 14th this made West’s task very difficult and the gritty Australian dropped to 16th place before crashing on lap three.

The race was won by Japanese hero Hiroshi Aoyama ahead of his Honda teammate dani pedrosa with Casey Stoner third. Both Alex de Angelis and Jorge Lorenzo crashed on the he final lap, costing them a chance of a podium positions.

Anthony West #14 - DNF

“I was missing a lot of top speed here and losing five bike lengths on the straights and then almost running over guys on the brakes and into the corners. I know the bike is new but it’s frustrating when you are racing, so I started pushing to try and keep pace but lost the front. I’ve bruised the muscles in my left wrist, it’s pretty sore because I’ve got an old injury there, but luckily it is not broken.”

Harald Bartol - Managing and Technical Director

“I’m not happy with the current performance level of the 250 but I expected this in our first test year. No one should expect a quick repeat of second place in the rain at Donington. I need to look at engine settings to try and find some solutions. It is frustrating for Anthony, he just has to be patient.

“After the 125cc race our team has lodged protest to check the engine capacity of Luthi’s bike which was not in parc ferme. On another issue I think the sport needs to address the rule which allows a rider who causes the race to be stopped to still score points which is what happened in the 125 race.”
