POLE POSITION FOR TALMACSI, KALLIO CRASHES
17 September 2005 - KTM-Sportmotorcycles AG
Hungarian rider Gabor Talmacsi claimed his first pole position for the Red Bull KTM team with the fastest time in final qualifying for the Japanese Grand Prix.
While Talmacsi celebrated, theRE was disappointment for teammate Mika Kallio who crashed, without injury, on his final lap as he tried for faster time. Kallio had set the provisional pole time yesterday but dropped to fifth on the grid, unable to improve his Friday time. The third Red Bull KTM rider, Julian Simon, will start from 11th on the grid having made a dramatic improvement overnight. Simon sliced 1.5s from his Friday qualifying time and he is confident of a strong race performance. Kallio crashed at turn two, the first left-hander, when he lost the front-end. Even though he will start front the second row of the grid Kallio is just 0.4s off pole as he bids to close the gap on championship points leader Thomas Luthi who qualified seventh. After finding a more comfortable set-up balance with his KTM for final qualifying, Talmacsi was in brilliant form, cutting 1.2s from his previous best time to claim pole position. Talmacsi is confident that he has a strong race rhythm and can set the pace from the front in the tomorrow’s 21 lap race. Weather conditions were again warm and humid for qualifying. GABOR TALMACSI #14 - First - 1’58.653 ”My first pole, this is a great feeling at track where I have always been fast. Today the bike was perfect, we made some changes from yesterday and I had a very good feeling today. I have a very good rhythm for the race, I can go alone at the front without following anyone.” MIKA KALLIO #36 - Fifth- 1’59.137 “I tried many tyres, both front and rear today, and perhaps we made slightly the wrong choice at the end of qualifying. I switched to a harder front tyre and had some big slides and then crashed at turn two. At least I know what tyres to use for the race now! Everything is OK, we have a fast bike here so I’m confident for the race.” JULIAN SIMON #60 - Eleventh - 1’59.660 “The bike felt very good in the morning free practice but I did not have the same feeling when the track was much warmer in the afternoon. Plus I had a small gearbox problem and there was a lot of traffic when I tried for my fast time. But the overall the bike is strong for the race, I’m. confident of a good a result.”
