THAT’S ASDA ‘PRIZE’
05 September 2005 - BMF
Supermarket giant Asda have won an award for being proactive in the fight against diesel spillage on the UK’s roads.
The KillSpills/BMF Diesel Spills Reduction Award 2005 has been awarded to Asda Distribution for their work in briefing their drivers on the danger that diesel spillages present to motorcyclists. Asda employ over 4,000 drivers on its vehicle fleet and they cover over 130 million miles each year. As part of their programme, Asda have also exhibited KillSpills posters and ensured that all new drivers who join the Company also receive a briefing on preventing diesel spills. The award, sponsored by Bennetts Insurance, will be presented to Asda’s Fleet Contracts manager Chris Hall at the start of the 2005 KillSpills Rally being held on Saturday 10th September. The KillSpills Rally is an event designed to raise the profile of the menace that spilt diesel presents to the UK’s 1.2 million motorcycle and scooter riders. Over 1200 riders are expected to join what is the second KillSpills Rally which takes the form of a mass ride, starting from the famous Ace Cafe London on the North Circular Road and ending at the House of Commons where Liberal Democrat Shadow Transport Minister, Tom Brake, will meet riders. Commenting on the award, Stephen Edwards of the KillSpills organisation said: “We have had terrific support from many sectors of road user but Asda in particular have to be congratulated for their stance on this vital road safety issue and are a shining example of how large companies can make a real difference.” Chris Hall for Asda said: “Asda are proud to be associated with such a worthwhile campaign. With such a large fleet we are in a great position to promote the valuable messages that KillSpills stands for. A number of our drivers are regular bike users and are also passionate about the issues associated with diesel spills and therefore the campaign was greeted with enthusiasm.” Riders taking part in the KillSpills Rally will be flagged-off from the Ace Cafe London on London’s old North Circular Road by the Mayor for the London Borough of Brent, Councillor Colum Moloney. A delegation from the ride will also call at 10 Downing Street where an anniversary card and eight- page diesel hazard report will be presented to Prime Minister Tony Blair. Recommendations from the report include: 1. Ensuring that appropriate warning signs are displayed at petrol stations, on diesel pumps, depot refuelling points and vehicle diesel tanks informing diesel users of the dangers of overfilling diesel tanks or not refitting the filler cap correctly 2. Amending the Highway Code to highlight the dangers and publicise the penalties of spilling diesel on the public highway 3. Using the THINK! Campaign to get the diesel spill message across to the public and transport operators, “Think! DIEsel Spills KILL” 4. Continuing to lobby within Europe for a European-wide resolution of this issue so as to ensure that future generations of commercial vehicles have anti-spill devices fitted as standard 5. Encouraging Government Departments and Local Authorities to lead by example, ensuring that their drivers are fully briefed about the dangers of overfilling a diesel tank and or not refitting the filler cap correctly 6. Advising the general public to use 999 to report diesel spills 7. Issuing guidelines to the emergency services relating to the treatment of diesel. Diesel spilt on road surfaces is a lethal combination. The 140,000 strong British Motorcyclist Federation has long campaigned on the issue of spilt diesel, but it is backing the KillSpills Rally as a way of bringing the issue to a wider audience. According to Department for Transport figures, every year some 300 motorcycle accidents are attributed to diesel spillage, but it is well known that if another vehicle is not involved and injuries are slight, an accident goes unreported. Join the ride, wear the T shirt, fly the flag, share the day - be there if you care! KillSpills London Rally, Saturday 10th September. Ride starts at 13.00 hrs at the Ace Cafe London, Old North Circular Road. All participants will be issued with KillSpills pennants, stickers and an information pack. Full details on the rally, a poster download and how to buy an official KillSpills T- shirt, can all be found on: www.bmf.co.uk or go direct to www.killspills.org.uk
