DETERMINED FIGHT BACK FROM AIM RIDER IN SUPERSTOCK CLASS
30 August 2005 - Aim Racing
Shand scored a brilliant eight place after a first corner incident involving several riders at this weekends Superstock race at Cadwell Park.
The AIM rider was forced onto the grass after several riders clashed at the now famous Cadwell turn 1. This relegated the Scottish rider to 20th place as he fought to stay on board his Yamaha 1000cc machine grass tracking at 100mph. A truly magnificent ride saw the AIM rider fight his way back from 20th to 8th and claim 8 championship points. Shand commented “This weekend has been a trying time for me and the lads, I was up to 4th place for a good part of the 2nd qualifying session, but towards the end I started having problems with 4th and 5th gear. This saw me slip from the front row to the 3rd, a massive disappointing result for all the team. We checked the gearbox and found it to be heavily damaged. As a result I decided to ride my spare bike for the race; this was a difficult choice as I had not ridden the bike since the TT. I made a good start and as I tipped into the first corner; riders were colliding in to each other; as a result Laverty hit me, the only place for me to go was on the grass. I some how managed to stay upright, all I thought was, stay on I need the points. As I came back on to the track I was turning the air blue inside my helmet as I was more than half way down the field. I was determined to get back in to the top 10. I forced my way through the field and got up to about 12th by the end of the first lap. The move of the 1st lap for me was at Charlies I braked very late and managed to pass 5 riders, the bike handled brilliantly and I have got to thank the guys for the hard work on getting the bike working the way it did, I worked the bike really hard and my lap times were again the same as the front runners, I was only 200th of a second outside the fastest lap and I had traffic to contend with. I finished the race 8th; I can’t seem to get away from that position as it’s the 4th time this year I have finished there. I am now 9th in the championship on 75 points, my goal is a top 5 championship finish and I am determined to do it. I enjoy and go well at the remaining tracks and I want more Sliver ware this year.”
