SPEEDWAY WEEKLY ROUND-UP
30 August 2005 - British Speedway Promoters Association

ARENA-ESSEX boss Ronnie Russell wants to see top riders making the Elite League a higher priority after only being able to run one home meeting in August.

ELITE LEAGUE LATEST

Russell said: ''I''m going to table the idea that if a rider wants to ride in Britain then he can only ride in one other League. ''I love the GP, but it''s taking over in this country and we have to do something about it. It''s the summer holiday month of August and we''ve only had one meeting.'' BELLE VUE star Kenneth Bjerre is relieved that a succession of mechanical problems is behind him. Bjerre scored a maximum against Eastbourne after some below-par returns. He said: ''I have had three engines blow up on me in eight days so I had my tuner fly over from Denmark and bring me one of the motors I use over there, and it went perfectly for me. ''I''d had a disappointing run with only ten points from my previous two home meetings but at least the team has kept on winning while I''ve been having problems.'' COVENTRY star Billy Janniro says the Bees cannot afford to dwell on their shock home defeat by Ipswich if they are to clinch a play-off place this season. Janniro said: ''The team just weren''t making the starts, and we know where we messed up and lost points at critical times. ''It shouldn''t have happened, but we have to bounce back. We''re still trying to finish second in the League and we have to look ahead and not back.'' EASTBOURNE boss Jon Cook congratulated Nicki Pedersen on his ELRC triumph, and revealed that broken collar-bone victim Adam Shields could return this week. Cook said: ''It was a fantastic performance from Nicki, and rounded off a good weekend for us after a poor week on the road. ''It augurs well ahead of our matches at Peterborough and we will be talking with Adam in midweek to make a decision on whether he will return to the team.'' IPSWICH''S young Polish star Robert Miskowiak says he learnt the lessons from a zero points return at Arena-Essex recently - and made a vital contribution in the Witches'' win at Coventry. Miskowiak said: ''I learned from failing to score and will be a better rider because of it. It was not a good night but I will gain from it. ''This sport is much more enjoyable when you are winning. Nobody likes to finish last as I did at Arena, but that is speedway.'' OXFORD boss Nigel Wagstaff has slammed former favourite Lukas Dryml after he collided with Niels Kristian Iversen in the Bank Holiday clash with Peterborough at Cowley. Wagstaff said: ''Lukas Dryml was a very popular figure here at Oxford Speedway and many people have reminded me of that fact from the first moment I walked into the club. ''However, that move on Monday was bang out of order. He should have been thrown out of the meeting.'' PETERBOROUGH manager Trevor Swales is putting no pressure on his team after a dramatic run of form has hauled the Panthers into the thick of the battle for play-off spots. Swales said: ''I think the toll of seven meetings in seven days is quite enough for the riders without me making demands and setting targets. ''Nothing has changed as far as our stance on the play-offs is concerned. If we make it great, but if we fall short every rider has given their all and I''ll be proud of them.'' POOLE boss Neil Middleditch is frustrated by the inconsistency of his riders after losing all three points at Wolverhampton on Monday. Middleditch said: ''A couple of our boys didn''t perform up to standard and we can''t win matches with riders under-performing. We made gates but were gobbled up in the first bends. ''Lots of teams now have seeen a chink in our armour as it''s so long since we''ve won away, and they are all going for it.'' SWINDON star Lee Richardson enjoyed his best-ever Grand Prix result in Bydgoszcz at the weekend when he finished as runner-up, only the second time he has been on a GP podium. Richardson said: ''I had been riding well at league level and just needed to bring that form into the Grand Prix. I swapped bikes and my second machine performed brilliantly. ''I needed a big finish to the series after the way things have gone this year, and this was a fantastic night for me. I am over the moon with the result.'' WOLVERHAMPTON skipper Steve Johnston insists the team will be aiming for as high a league position as possible - despite missing out on the play-offs. He said: ''We''ve got the Craven Shield coming up and the better we finish in the league the better meetings we are going to have in the Shield, so we still want to fight to the end. We still want to win matches.''

PREMIER LEAGUE LATEST.

BERWICK boss Peter Waite says the Bandits need to quickly put Monday''s heavy defeat at Workington behind them to keep in contention for the Premier League title. Waite said: ''It was not what we wanted or expected by a long chalk, but we are in no way dead and buried. It is going to go right down to the wire and it could still come our way.'' EDINBURGH star Ross Brady says he has no concerns about his fitness after making a successful return from a broken ankle last Friday against Workington. Brady said: ''My first race was fine and I felt as if I''d never been off the bike. It was a hard first corner but I got stuck in - and as far as conditions went, I couldn''t have picked a worse night to come back.'' EXETER star Lee Smethills is back in action after suffering a freak eye problem at Newport - caused by loss of sleep! Smethills said: ''I went to see an optometrist and they seemed to think it was a fatigue migraine because I hadn''t had much sleep all week and only two hours before that meeting.'' GLASGOW co-promoter Alan Dick knows that a top eight finish is now virtually beyond the Tigers. but is desperate for his team to win all of their remaining home fixtures. Dick said: ''I felt there was a chance of us recording some away wins, but we must make sure we are bringing an element of a feel-good factor back to our supporters.'' HULL City Council have earmarked Hedon Aerodome, their former home in the 1940s, as a potential venue for speedway next season. Promoter Paul Hodder said: ''Timescale-wise, Hedon is the easier option and it gives us the best chance of continuity of speedway racing, although the central site is very high profile.'' ISLE OF WIGHT promoter Dave Pavitt says that the Islanders'' run of form augurs well for progression into the Young Shield play-off competiton. Pavitt said: ''We''ve had two more excellent home wins and are now right in the mix for the play-offs. We''re into the top eight and hopefully we will stay there.'' KING''S LYNN boss Rob Lyon is warning against complacency at the Norfolk Arena with the Stars holding one of the most impressive home records in the Premier League. Lyon said: ''I have warned the whole team not to take our 100% home record for granted and to focus on winning every single point.'' NEWCASTLE manager George English was pleased that the Diamonds recovered from a week of poor away results to take a home win in a nail-biter against Glasgow. English said: ''I really did not think we could win this match, but the lads rode out of their skins to take a famous victory. This win was a real bonus.'' NEWPORT star Mads Korneliussen is set to make his comeback this week after a lengthy absence with a shoulder injury, the Wasps having struggled during his time out. Korneliussen said: ''It''s taken such a long time to get back and I''m still not fully fit but it should be okay. It would have actually been better to have broken a bone with how long it has taken.'' READING skipper Danny Bird has suffered another injury setback after a frightening crash in Heat 11 of the Racers'' Bank Holiday Monday match at Exeter. Bird sustained a dislocated elbow and facial injuries when he hit the fence and his arm was put in plaster prior to his release from hospital. RYE HOUSE collected maximum points from their Bank Holiday meetings against Stoke to steal a march on Berwick in the race for the Premier League title. The Rockets are three points behind the Bandits but still have six matches to ride, and three in hand on their rivals for the Championship. SHEFFIELD will have two representatives in the Premier League Riders'' Championship on their own track. after reigning champion Andre Compton got the wildcard. Compton lines up alongside Tigers skipper Sean Wilson at the showpiece event on Sunday September 18 (6pm). SOMERSET boss Mick Bell admitted he was relieved after seeing his side pick up their first away Premier League win of the season at Newport on Sunday. He said: ''I''ve been banging on all season about how I was desperate to see us win an away meeting in the league and we''ve finally done it.'' STOKE boss John Adams paid tribute to Rye House after seeing the Potters go down to two heavy defeats in three days against the title chasers. Adams said: ''They are just an awesome side and we didn''t get to grips with them at all. They really do hammer sides around there and we always knew it would be hard.'' WORKINGTON boss Graham Drury has sung the praises of new Polish signing Tomasz Piscsz after some impressive early performances for the club. Drury said: ''I''ve seen a lot of speedway races around Derwent Park this season, but Tomasz was unbelievable on Monday night in our win over Berwick. ''Some of the things he was doing to score points were just special and I''m very pleased with the way he has adapted to life at Workington - he''s certainly become very popular here in a short space of time.''
