LATEST INDUSTRY STATISTICS HIGHLIGHT THE IMPORTANCE OF BACK PROTECTORS
03 September 2005 - Planet Knox Ltd

Statistics released by the Motorcycle Industry Association* show that 13% of riders involved in an accident have a chance of suffering some form of back injury.

The complex structure of the lower back means that quite small amounts of damage to any of the structures of the back can cause a lot of pain and discomfort**. More worryingly, the same research shows that one out of every 125 riders involved in an accident will suffer a fracture of the spine. To put that in perspective, figures from the DfT*** show that over 25,000 bikers were seriously injured during 2003, of whom 200 would have suffered a fracture of the spine, if the MCIA statistics are applied.

In other words, on average four riders fracture their spine on UK roads every week.

Hardly surprising then that in a recent survey by the UK’s best-selling motorcycle newspaper**** a third of those questioned said that their “biggest biking fear is that they would end up in a wheelchair.”

Although wearing a CE-approved back protector will minimise the risk of potential injury, according to industry estimates less than one in ten riders wears a back protector.

“It’s a crazy situation,” comments Geoff Travell, MD of British impact protection specialists Planet-Knox. “There are half a million bikers out there worried about back injury, of whom only a fraction are doing something to protect themselves!”

Professional motorcycle racers have recognised the dangers of back injury for many years and wear back-protectors as a matter of routine.

“You can’t afford to take any risks where safety is concerned,” states BSB Champion John Reynolds.

Knox offer a wide range of back-protectors, suitable for everything from touring to track-days, in sizes to fit men women & children. Good quality back-protectors are not expensive either; the Knox Stowaway, which is produced in the UK and comfortably exceeds the current European standard, sells for £59.99 inc. VAT.
