BRILLIANT BRNO RACE BY ANTHONY WEST
28 August 2005 - KTM-Sportmotorcycles AG
Red Bull KTM rider Anthony West showed his true racing spirit with a brilliant ride into twelfth place in today’s Czech Grand Prix at Brno.
In just the third race for the new KTM 250, West was in fine form and charged through the pack from 23rd on the grid to be in ninth place at the end of lap. With the new KTM still lacking development West settled in 11th place and then had a race long battle with local Czech rider Jakub Smrz on a Honda. Over the final seven laps Smrz would power past West on the main straight and hold the advantage along the fats back straight, only for West to go ahead through the chicanes on the final part of the lap. On the final lap Smrz was able to power ahead on the run to the chequered flag and snatch 11th place from West by just 0.2s at the finish. The race was won by world championship leader Dani pedrosa ahead of fellow Spaniard Jorge Lorenzo with Australian Casey Stoner in third place. There is still a great deal of development to be completed on the KTM 250 both with a program to improve both chassis set-up and engine performance in advance of the 2006 world championship season. Anthony West #14 - Twelfth - Championship : 15th/ 30 points “Ninth place is much better than 23rd that’s for sure. It was carnage on the first lap, I was passing guys outside and inside, wherever i could just to try and move up a few positions. My start was OK but it could have been better, I’m still getting used to the clutch on this bike. And then I had a big battle with Smrz who had more top end power than my bike would just come past on the straight every lap. I know the team have a plan to get more power and I guess I’ve just got to be patient -- this is only a new bike.”
