WOLVERHAMPTON SPEEDWAY
27 July 2004 - British Speedway Promoters Association

WOLVERHAMPTON kept up their hopes of a top two place in the Elite League with a hard-fought 49-44 win over Ipswich at Monmore.

Chris Louis rolled back the years with a vintage performance for Ipswich who gave Wolves a real fright. The Monmore men eventually overcame the stubborn resistance, but not before Louis, who has overcome a series of career threatening injuries, romped to four race wins. Wolves made the best possible start with a 5-1 in the opening race from Max and Lindgren, after Hans Andersen, had fallen on the first turn. Wolves looked set to repeat the dose in heat two, after both home riders had passed the fast starting King, but fate decreed otherwise as race leader Skornicki lost a chain on the last lap. Howe took a comfortable win in the following race, as Lindgren and Louis exchanged passes, before the visitor clinched second place. Ipswich got a 5-1 of their own, to narrow the deficit to two points in heat five, thanks to Andersen and Jansson, but Wolves extended their lead in the next race as Skornicki claimed a good win over Nicholls, who had relegated Max to third. The turning point of the match came in heat eleven. Wolves were four points ahead when Skornicki rode a forceful second turn to cut inside Jansson and join partner Ermolenko for a 5-1. That allowed Ipswich to nominate Louis for a double point tactical ride in the next race. Although last away from the tapes, Louis picked his way through the field, helping the visitors to a maximum 1-8 from the heat to reduce Wolves'' lead to one point. That only served to ignite Wolves'' fighting spirit. Ermolenko went past Nicholls and then the American and Max went either side of Andersen to give Wolves a five point cushion. Louis passed Howe in Heat 14, but Wolves filled the minor places to ensure victory on a night where their all round strength proved crucial.
WOLVERHAMPTON: Mikael Max 11+1, Simon Stead 10+1, Sam Ermolenko 9+1, David Howe 7+2, Adam Skornicki 7+1, Fredrik Lindgren 5+1.
IPSWICH: Chris Louis 18+1, Scott Nicholls 11, Kim Jansson 5+1, Daniel King
4+2, Hans Andersen 4, Kevin Doolan 2.
