CHAMPIONSHIP CRUNCH TIME FOR SNETTERTON BIKE RACERS
23 August 2005 - MotorSport Vision

New Era Motor Cycle Club hits Norfolk track for Bank Holiday

The New Era Motor Cycle Club has raced all across the country so far this season and, as it reaches Snetterton for the penultimate meeting of the year this Bank Holiday weekend (August 28/29), it’s now or never for those riders who are still hoping for strong finishes in the championship.

Peter Baker is probably Norfolk’s most successful rider so far this year, and the West Winch rider currently heads the points in the Pro-bike open series with six wins from 13 races. Just 12 points behind though is Jonathan Lester who won last time out at Donington Park, and there will be very little between the two riders.

The first races on each day will be for the Formula 600 and 400 races, with Kerrigan Read and David Tinkler the local competitors. Read, who is from Thurston near Bury St Edmonds, has only scored three times so far this year but Norwich’s Tinkler, who is 11th in the points standings, is more likely to be a frontrunner. With a best finish of fourth in the season so far, Tinkler will be hopeful of getting a podium finish with his Honda 600 machine. Both riders will find it tough to beat Richard Norris though, who is as yet undefeated in this category.

A few more local riders will be out in the races for 125 and 250cc Grand Prix bikes, with Norwich schoolboy Aaron Easter a frontrunner, currently lying sixth in the points. A second Norwich rider, John Lea, and King’s Lynn’s Zac Key will also be out, but expected to be further down the order. All three local men will be riding Honda 125s.

In the Honda Hornet races, Jonty Dixon, from Norwich, has won once in 2005 and the pressure is on for him to repeat the performance on home ground. Although he lies 54 points behind championship leader Matthew Briggs, all it would need would be a bad weekend for Briggs and Dixon could move ahead.

The Sound of Thunder series features a range of bikes including Triumphs, Ducatis, Aprilias and Yamahas, where Simon Nuttall, a Ducati-riding Scot who leads the championship, is a likely winner. Melton Mowbray’s Mark Hoogenboom is someone else who has tasted victory in 2005, and should be at the front.

Tickets for the New Era meeting cost £12 per adult per day, with children aged 12 and under admitted free. Parking and paddock access are also free of charge.
