SPEEDWAY: WEEKLY ROUND-UP
23 August 2005 - British Speedway Promoters Association

ARENA-ESSEX promoter Ronnie Russell has explained the difficulties of fixture scheduling which have left the Hammers without home matches on several summer Wednesdays.

ELITE LEAGUE LATEST

Russell said: ''It''s been very difficult to get fixtures re-arranged because of clashes with other Leagues. It''s a rider''s living to go and race in other countries. ''Early in the season it''s easy to get teams to fill blank fixtures, but now there are only a few we can go to so it''s not so easy.'' BELLE VUE boss Ian Thomas is aware that the Aces are now almost certain of top spot in the Elite League ahead of the play-offs after a convincing win over Eastbourne. The Aces are currently on 61 points and a home win over Peterborough in their last fixture will virtually guarantee first place. Thomas said: ''The boys did a very good job. Eastbourne are nobody''s mugs, but we got stuck in and the track got better as the meeting went on.'' COVENTRY skipper Scott Nicholls says that the consistent scoring of the whole Bees team can see the Brandon club challenge strongly for a top two finish in the Elite League. Nicholls said: ''It really helps now that we have a full-strength side with Sebastian Ulamek coming in, and we''ve proved already that we can win away at places where we are not expected to. ''I feel good at the moment and I''m happy with the way things are going. I''ve got a really busy run coming up so I just want to keep the momentum up for myself and the team.'' EASTBOURNE promoter Jon Cook feels that the acquisition of Oliver Allen gives the Eagles greater strength in depth than they have had at any previous stage this season. Cook said: ''We will be giving Olly every opportunity to race Arlington in between now and the end of the season as he could well earn himself a team spot for 2006. ''If his first few rides were anything to go by, we now have the strongest reserve pairing of the year at just the right time.'' IPSWICH skipper Chris Louis says that the Witches will be targeting the Craven Shield as they appear to now be out of contention for a play-off place in the Elite League. Louis said: ''While there is hope we will go for it, but whatever happens we will be looking to make an impact in the Craven Shield. ''From being third on our list, it may well become our main priority. It will give us a chance to re-group and finish the season on a high note.'' OXFORD promoter Nigel Wagstaff praised his weakend team, who secured their first win since June by beating reigning Champions Poole despite being without Greg Hancock. Wagstaff said: ''I feel we deserved our win having to cope with our skipper having to miss the meeting through illness. ''I can''t praise my side''s efforts enough, the bonus point would have put the icing on the cake, but a win is a win.'' PETERBOROUGH owner Colin Horton has thanked the club''s landlords at the East of England Showground as he has been able to confirm regular Thursday racing for 2006. Horton said: ''I''m absolutely ecstatic following successful negotiations, and I would like it made public that the Showground management were superb to deal with. ''They were very understanding of our needs and I think this in itself reflects what an excellent relationship they have forged with the club and myself in a very short space of time.'' POOLE star Antonio Lindback, who has already signed to ride for the club next season, says that he does not want to ride for any other British club. Lindback said: ''If Poole want me to stay for many years, I want to stay for many years. It took me all of ten seconds to decide to sign for Poole for next year. ''I want to do my best to make this club successful and make our fans happy. I''m here to score as many points as I can, and I want to step up my game a bit next year.'' SWINDON star Leigh Adams feels he has ridden through a difficult patch after suffering concussion last month. Adams said: ''The crash at Coventry certainly knocked me around a bit. Although I thought I was okay, I was riding the bike a bit stiff and not riding it right. I feel as if I am riding it a lot better now. ''The Scandinavian Grand Prix was very good for me in the end, and I converted another nine points into 16. I was happy with that and it was good to get back on track.'' WOLVERHAMPTON skipper Steve Johnston is looking to continue his good form of the last two meetings for the rest of the season with team honours still up for grabs. Johnston said: ''No-one was more disappointed than myself with how things have gone in the last month or so, and I hope I can finish on a good note now. ''We''ve got the Craven Shield coming up, and the better we finish in the League the better meetings we will have in that, so we''ll fight to the end.''

PREMIER LEAGUE LATEST...

BERWICK promoter Peter Waite says that team spirit is the key to a run of form which leaves the Bandits in with a real chance of winning the Premier League. Waite said: ''The team work as a solid unit, no huge stars beaming out but just solid class and determination from one to seven. They deserve a medal for their form this season.'' EDINBURGH''S popular Australian Cameron Woodward hopes to be back next year after seeing his season curtailed by a broken wrist. He said: ''It will be six to eight weeks before I''m fit so the best thing is to go home and regain my fitness, and hopefully be back next season. I''ve got some great supporters and sponsors here.'' EXETER promoter David Short has several injuries to contend with following the Falcons'' first away win in the Premier League for four years at Newport on Sunday. Short said: ''It was a superb effort all round but we now face a struggle to rebuild the team in time for the weekend clashes with Reading.'' GLASGOW co-promoter Stewart Dickson says that a change of mechanical set-up is the reason for the dramatically improved scoring from reserve James Cockle. Dickson said: ''James was certainly low on confidence, but he has changed tuners recently and that seems to be making such a difference.'' HULL owner Paul Hodder remains optimistic that the Vikings will run in 2006 despite the news that they are likely to be leaving Craven Park at the end of this season. Hodder said: ''I do have several potential backers who want to see speedway stay in the city. To stay at Craven Park for the next three seasons would have cost £204,000 which is unrealistic.'' ISLE OF WIGHT manager Dave Croucher says that the Islanders are now in with a strong chance of reaching the Young Shield with a top-eight Premier League finish. Croucher said: ''I feel pretty confident now that that we can qualify, although we cannot afford any slip-ups. The three latest wins have given us just the right sort of boost to push ahead.'' KING''S LYNN manager Rob Lyon says that all-round team strength will be required in the closing weeks of the season if the Stars are to gain honours. Lyon said: ''This really is the time for our reserves to come out and sparkle, we need them to start stepping up a gear and be prepared for when Berwick visit in the KO Cup.'' NEWCASTLE manager George English has praised the maturity of reserve Jamie Robertson, who scored heavily in the Diamonds'' hard-fought home win over Sheffield. English said: ''Jamie has stood up and been counted as the team has been beset by injuries. He has shown a much more mature attitude which is benefitting both him and the team.'' NEWPORT promoter Tim Stone was encouraged by the performance of recent Danish recruit Henrik Vedel in Sunday''s narrow home defeat by Exeter. Stone said: ''Henrik was applying himself much better, and if he continues to do that then he will be able to carve out a niche for himself.'' READING boss Tim Sugar believes the Racers'' season has finally turned around with improved recent results leading to an increase in home crowd levels. Sugar said: ''It''s been good to finally get some wins under our belts and it has given everyone a lift. It''s also been satisfying to see it reflected in our attendances.'' RYE HOUSE face vital home and away clashes with Stoke over the Bank Holiday weekend as they bid to reel in Premier League leaders Berwick. In addition, the club stage the prestigious Conference League Riders'' Championship at Hoddesdon on Saturday evening. SHEFFIELD boss Neil Machin has vented his frustration after Tigers failed to make an impact in the Premier League Fours and also slipped up with a defeat at Newcastle. Machin said: ''The weekend was an absolute write-off and a waste of time and energy, and it appears that I''m working harder than some of our so-called ''superstars''.'' SOMERSET manager Mick Bell has dedicated the Rebels'' Premier League Fours triumph to the club''s loyal supporters who made the trip to Derwent Park. Bell said: ''For those Somerset people there it was an absolutely brilliant night, it was a trophy we have been wanting ever since we became involved. I''m delighted and I would like to thank the fans for their support.'' STOKE team manager John Adams is tipping Berwick for top honours after seeing his team beaten at home by the League leaders. Adams said: ''I think they were hungrier than us and we possibly saw the 2005 League Champions here tonight.'' WORKINGTON boss Graham Drury was proud of his depleted team for taking second place in last weekend''s successful Premier League Fours at Derwent Park. Drury said: ''If anybody had said to me before the meeting that we would be in contention throughout and that we would take it to a last heat decider, I would have taken that.''
