AIRWAVES DUCATI RIDERS PAIRED ON FRONT ROW AT SILVERSTONE
20 August 2005 - GSE Racing

Airwaves Ducati riders Gregorio Lavilla and Leon Haslam claimed front row starting positions for the ninth round of the Bennetts British Superbike Championship, following a fantastic effort in qualifying at Silverstone today.

The pairing will start side by side in 3rd and 4th positions on the grid after the two sessions concluded at the Northamptonshire circuit.

Gregorio claimed his best qualifying position of the year so far, to boost his confidence as he aims for victory to close the gap in the Championship title race. After an excellent effort in the morning session, Leon deserved better than fourth, unfortunately held up in his quest to improve his qualifying time this afternoon. Both riders were comfortably under the lap record, with Leon finishing on 1.26.366s and Gregorio on 1.26.334, both just over two tenths down on pole.

Airwaves Ducati Team Manager, Colin Wright, was happy with the team’s qualifying performance: “It’s fantastic for both riders to be on the front row and gives us an excellent chance to challenge for victories tomorrow. What better way to signal our intent over the closing races this season – we will be fighting for the Championship to the end”.

Leon was disappointed he couldn’t improve his time this afternoon: “I felt so comfortable on the bike this morning, I claimed third position and was looking to grab pole this afternoon. I’m pretty frustrated I couldn’t get a clear lap in the second session as I was forced to avoid the same back marker on three different laps. I know pole was in my reach but I’m happy with a front row start all the same. My race pace is good so I’ll be hoping to challenge for a podium tomorrow”.

Gregorio was delighted with his best performance in qualifying so far this season: “It’s great to be on the front row and shows what we can achieve when we have tested at a track. I saved most of my qualifiers for this afternoon’s session and I’m pleased I managed to improve my time. I had to swap onto my second bike in both sessions but I feel comfortable with the settings. My race set up is good, I just need to decide exactly which tyre to use and then I will be eager to battle for a race win tomorrow.

The ninth round of the Bennetts British Superbike Championship consists of two 22-lap races at 13h15 and 15h45 tomorrow.
