SPEEDWAY WEEKLY ROUND-UP
16 August 2005 - British Speedway Promoters Association
ARENA-ESSEX promoter Ronnie Russell wants to draw a line under the season so far and see his team put in some strong showings with silverware still to be won.
ELITE LEAGUE LATEST Russell said: ''I want to start again and for my riders to show me why they should get a place in the team next year. ''We''ve got the Craven Shield, which I really want us to go for, and we''re still in the Knockout Cup. This is a chance to get things right.'' BELLE VUE recovered from the blow of losing an unwell Simon Stead and conceding 5-1s in the first two races to take both match and bonus points in their clash with Coventry. Boss Ian Thomas said: ''After losing Stead, and then going 10-2 down, I would have settled very happily for the win, never mind adding on the bonus point as well. ''It was a great comeback against any team, never mind one as good as Coventry. It was a brilliant performance in front of a big crowd.'' COVENTRY co-boss Peter Oakes says that the Bees have not been affected by Monday''s defeat at Belle Vue as they battle for a top two finish in the Elite League. Oakes said: ''Maybe we were a little rusty because it has been a long lay-off for us. It was noticeable that Scott Nicholls was in such good form and he has been riding regularly. ''But it doesn''t damage our chances of getting second spot due to the result at Poole, and we''ve got to make sure we win everything at home.'' EASTBOURNE boss Jon Cook was stunned and delighted that the Eagles registered a win over Wolverhampton despite having to track a depleted team. Cook said: ''My programme notes were written before the injuries and I said it was a potential banana skin. I was very uneasy even with the full team with the exception of Nicki. ''It really shows that when we are down we are certainly not out, and I cannot say enough about them all.'' IPSWICH boss Mike Smillie was pleased to be able to reflect on a much better all-round performance as the Witches defeated title hopefuls Poole. Smillie said: ''This is a pleasing and vital result for us and I was especially pleased that our reserves were solid, outscoring their opposite numbers by six points. ''Our lads looked more confident and they will need to remain this strong right through to the end of the season to capture something from this campaign.'' OXFORD assistant boss Bryn Williams took charge of the Silver Machine at Wolverhampton and was delighted to come away with a draw. Williams, standing in for Nigel Wagstaff, said: ''It''s a terrific result, particularly when you consider everything we''ve been up against this season. It can only lift everybody at the club. ''Billy Hamill was magnificent, everybody has seen his scores since he came back from injury but he was back to his best at Monmore and was almost unbeatable.'' PETERBOROUGH manager Trevor Swales was in jubilant mood after the Panthers ended Poole''s unbeaten home run which stretched back over 400 days. Swales said: ''I predicted we would do this at some stage, and we just needed to get the guys firing together. It was a team effort and I''m not singling anyone out. ''All seven of them were fantastic and the team spirit is absolutely out of this world. It''s a pleasure to be the manager of this team.'' POOLE have confirmed that they have agreed a deal for popular Swede Antonio Lindback to remain with them next season, and well as an extension with club sponsors RIAS. But the Pirates are facing a battle to finish in the Elite League''s top two ahead of the play-offs after a shock home defeat against Peterborough. Boss Neil Middleditch said: ''Belle Vue are running away with it and we just have to concentrate on finishing in second place. That is our main aim now.'' SWINDON star Lee Richardson says the Robins must go into their Knockout Cup second leg tie against Belle Vue in a positive frame of mind despite facing a hefty deficit. Richardson said: ''We need to tell ourselves that we can do it. We''ve done well to get to the semi-finals and anything is possible in speedway. ''We do need to raise our game and all we can do is try our best. I think whoever progresses to the final from this tie will win the tournament.'' WOLVERHAMPTON reserve Ronnie Correy was pleased with his performance in the draw against Oxford, but frustrated that the team dropped a point. Correy, who scored paid 13, said: ''It should have been an easier meeting for us as they didn''t have a full team, but a few of our guys were having problems. ''My motors had been letting them down but but I took a step back and started all over again and I''m happy with how things are going now.'' PREMIER LEAGUE LATEST BERWICK promoter Peter Waite is predicting a thrilling end to the Premier League title race as the Bandits continue to build their lead at the top. Waite said: ''The team is really gelling as the big push for the ultimate prize gets closer and closer. I can''t wait for the run-in.'' EDINBURGH reserve Matthew Wethers is pleased with the form he has been showing on his return to the Monarchs team after spells with Glasgow and King''s Lynn. Wethers said: ''I had been thinking about the Somerset match all week but I was happy with my performance. The track has changed, but if you find the right lines you can ride that bit faster.'' EXETER promoter David Short is still confident of a top eight finish for the Falcons and qualification for the Young Shield play-offs after a convincing win over King''s Lynn. Short said: ''Out heat-leaders are all back on form. We have bounced back with a vengeance, and if we can repeat this kind of form on our travels then we will make it.'' GLASGOW co-promoter Alan Dick is optimistic that the Tigers can put on a strong performance in the Premier League Fours at Workington on Saturday. Dick said: ''Hopefully we can do well and with Workington missing Carl Stonehewer it makes things a little more even, although we do have a very tough group to try and qualify from.'' HULL have confirmed that Daniel Giffard will ride for them for the remainder of the season as a replacement for the injured Joel Parsons. Team manager Dave Peet said: ''Dan has been our most impressive reserve guest so far, and it gives both parties the chance to weigh up their options for next season.'' ISLE OF WIGHT chairman Martin Newnham is delighted with the impact made so far by new Polish signing Krzysztof Stojanowski. Newnham said: ''We''ve had our eyes on him for some time and everything fell into place. The fans have already taken him to their hearts and he is ultra-keen to do well.'' KING''S LYNN promoter Buster Chapman is pleased with the increased attendance levels at the Norfolk Arena, which he puts down to the team currently on track for the Stars. Chapman said: ''Our attendance figures are well up from the previous two years, and maybe it''s down to the team being full of so many personalities who are all building their own status.'' NEWCASTLE manager George English had sympathy for the unlucky Christian Henry, who ended Sunday''s dramatic match with Somerset on the injured list. English said: ''I feel a mixture of emotions because the win was superb, but to end up with Christian in hospital with an injury that should never have happened is a huge blow.'' NEWPORT promoter Tim Stone said that reserve Karl Mason fully justified his recall to the club''s first team line-up last weekend. Stone said: ''If he can keep up that level of improvement and pace I can see him being in the team for as long as he wants. He did himself a lot of credit.'' READING team manager Tim Sugar says that the return from injury of Danny Bird can see the Racers mount a strong finish to the Premier League season. Sugar said: ''We''re definitely a different team with Danny back in the side, so hopefully we can now start to pick up some points and pull away from the bottom of the league table.'' RYE HOUSE stage a Premier League double-header on Sunday afternoon as they look to make up ground in the title race. The Rockets have matches in hand on leaders Berwick and will be looking for maximum returns from their clashes with the Isle of Wight and Edinburgh. SOMERSET boss Mick Bell has sprung to the defence of his No.1 Magnus Zetterstrom, who was excluded from Sunday''s match at Newcastle after a Heat 11 clash with Christian Henry. Bell said: ''I couldn''t believe the referee''s decision. Magnus is not a dirty rider and there is no way he deliberately took Christian off. It was hard riding but there was no intent.'' SHEFFIELD manager Reg Wilson says that the Tigers need to target all five points from their forthcoming matches with Newcastle. Wilson said: ''If we can take all five then the likes of Berwick and Rye House will be having a look over their shoulder at us because they can see how determined we are.'' STOKE have confirmed that Justin Elkins has retired from the sport after suffering serious bike trouble whilst racing for the club''s Conference League outfit. Promoter Dave Tattum said: ''Justin said that he was calling it a day due to mechanical problems which had sapped his confidence and enthusiasm.'' WORKINGTON star Carl Stonehewer is already making plans for his comeback despite being ruled out for the rest of the season with serious skin damage. Stonehewer said: ''I will ride again, no question about that and hopefully it will be next season. I''ve been enjoying my racing more than ever this season.'' FIXTURE PICTURE...
