AIRWAVES DUCATI TAKE SENSATIONAL RESULTS AT SILVERSTONE
21 August 2005 - GSE Racing
Airwaves Ducati riders Gregorio Lavilla and Leon Haslam produced sensational results at Silverstone today in the ninth round of the Bennetts British Superbike Championship.
Gregorio took victory in the first race closely followed by his teammate, as the team recorded their second ‘one-two’ of the season and the pair battled valiantly in race two to secure second and third position. It was Airwaves Ducati’s best weekend of the season so far and will boost their chances of overhauling the Hondas 30 point lead in the Championship when racing resumes next weekend at Cadwell Park. In race one, Leon and Gregorio got away well from the start to lie in second and fourth and they battled with the two Hondas before a nasty crash involving three back markers prompted a red flag. Upon the restart, Gregorio worked his way up from seventh after lap one, eventually passing Rutter for the lead on lap 7. Leon also fought hard to try and pass the Honda rider to take second and eventually benefited on the penultimate lap when Rutter fell at the Woodcote hairpin, following Gregorio home for a brilliant ‘one-two’. Race two was also disrupted, initially by a safety car following a first corner crash and then stopped after oil was spilt onto the track. Both riders were quick off the line in the restarted race with Gregorio chasing Leon for second position. The two riders flirted with danger before Gregorio passed and pulled away from his teammate to chase the leader. Despite pushing hard all the way to the end, the Spaniard could not find a way to pass Kiyonari and he claimed an excellent second position. Leon was under pressure towards the end but held his nerve to secure a second podium of the afternoon. Airwaves Ducati Team Manager, Colin Wright, was delighted with the team’s performance: ”Naturally, I’m thrilled the team took four podiums across the two races and it’s certainly a bonus to close the gap by so many points on the Hondas! We’ve had a great weekend and the results will boost our confidence for next weekend at Cadwell Park”. Gregorio was delighted with his results: ”I’m really pleased with my performance and I enjoyed the two races. I had a minor problem with my clutch in race one so we changed it before the restart and it worked better. The key was that I was always trying to pass someone and gradually was able to threaten the leaders and take advantage when Michael made a mistake. The second race was very tough as I did not quite have enough speed to threaten Kiyo. I almost hit him a couple of times in the corners and this disrupted my rhythm but I’m pleased with the results, hopefully we can continue next weekend at Cadwell”. Leon reflected on a memorable day: “It’s the first time I have scored a double podium so that’s fantastic and I’m pleased with the weekend - a one-two for Airwaves Ducati is obviously fantastic. In race one, I felt really good on 70% of the circuit but kept losing a bit of time on a couple of corners and that meant I was never close enough to challenge for a race victory. In race two, I also had a minor problem which forced me to try a little too hard to stay in touch with the leaders but I was pleased with another podium”. The team heads to Cadwell Park for the tenth round of the British Superbike Championships on 27th – 29th August.
