BIKESURE INSURES ‘QUAD-MODDERS’ THE CUSTOM QUAD SHACK
22 August 2005 - Bikesure
They’re fast, they’re fun and they’re getting more popular by the second. It’s the age of the quad and pretty soon you’ll be seeing even more of them around.
Which suits Wayne Heathfield, who loves them. In fact, he’s building a business out of a gap in this youngest of markets: modified quads. “Modified bikes, like modified cars, are big business,” he says. “Quads are just taking off but no one is doing modified versions. Except me.” Wayne reckons the market for maxed-up quads will be huge in the future, and for now he’s setting the standard. His first mod-quad looked like something out of Alien. Alloys, wide wheels and the striking paint work created a unique monster – but Wayne discovered that, although he hadn’t retuned the quad or enhanced its performance, getting insurance was virtually impossible. “It’s hard enough to insure a quad for road use anyway,” he says. “Getting cover for a modified quad was worse.” Luckily, having been turned down by his previous insurer, he talked to Bikesure, who are fast becoming the UK’s leading name in quad insurance. “Their ‘can-do’ attitude is great,” says Wayne. “They were approachable, helpful, polite and willing to talk to you – in fact, they bent over backwards to sort me out.” Now Wayne knows that at least one company will be willing to insure his modified quads, he’s setting up the Custom Quad Shack to build more maxed-up versions. “I’ve had loads of offers for the first quad and I’ve got loads of ideas for the next ones,” he enthuses. “One idea is for a chopper quad – it’s going to look totally brilliant.” Most of Wayne’s mods will be cosmetic rather than for performance, at least initially. “To be road-legal you have to stay below 20bhp,” he explains. “For now the performance modification I’d recommend is a sprocket conversion. It adds about 5mph but mainly it brings the revs down, makes the quad quieter and gives it better fuel economy, so it’s a road-friendly and environment-friendly mod.” Wayne bases his custom builds on Quadzilla bodies. “They’re reliable and they’re great value,” he says. “You can customize one inexpensively and end up with a totally unique vehicle – and that’s what the modified quad is all about: being yourself, being one of a kind.” As well as doing the custom jobs, the Custom Quad Shack is also selling quads and off-road buggies – and recommending Bikesure for customers’ insurance. “What Wayne is doing is great, really original,” says Robert Balls of Bikesure, “he’s creating a new market and we wish him well. We pride ourselves on taking a freethinking approach and we’re happy to insure his quads, however outlandish, as long as they’re road-legal of course.” For information on Wayne’s custom quads call him on 07742 253397. Bikesure has a huge range of specialist policies for the motorcycle enthusiast, including schemes for trikes and quads.
