MRO POWERBIKES HEAD ‘MAKE OR BREAK’ MEETING AT CADWELL PARK
15 August 2005 - MotorSport Vision

Lincolnshire riders expect to take points from championship regulars

Several of the championships on the MRO Powerbike Tour have reached a crucial stage of the 2005 season, and head to Cadwell Park this weekend (August 20/21), where their fate could well be determined. Although no championships can be decided, many riders are in desperate need of points, and there will be plenty of local riders aiming to take them away.

Hull racer Richie Welsh, Bourne’s Leighton Walker and Spalding’s Ian Cooper will all challenge in the Supersport 400 races, while Stamford’s Jack Wright will be a podium contender in the MiniTwins. York’s Ian Gardner is a firm favourite for GP 250 honours, and there are also several riders from the East Midlands who have been attracted to one of the most challenging circuits in British motorcycling.

Jonti Hobday is one such rider, and has consistently been the man to be in this season’s Powerbike Championship. The Chesterfield racer heads the points and, now riding a GSXR Suzuki until the end of the season, if he wins at Cadwell then the title and a passage to British Superstock will be virtually assured. Victory here though is far from assured, as King’s Lynn racer Peter Baker has a great deal of experience around the Lincolnshire venue, and will never be far behind Hobday.

In the last GP125 Championship rounds at Knockhill, Sheffield racer Benji Dawson, along with Mark Cox and Luke Hinton, all fell from their Hondas but will be back at Cadwell Park. The beneficiaries of their accidents, Lee Costello and Alan Winton, will be part of a close battle among this top five.

In the SuperTwins series, one question to be answered is whether Ben Garner’s consistency will continue – the RSV Aprilia pilot has finished every race so far this year. Jay Fernandez was the man to beat before Garner’s consistency gave him the title lead though, and is the most likely frontrunner. Craig Polden, Chris Roster and Rob Wittey all moved up the table at Knockhill, while local interest at Cadwell Park will focus on the progress Stamford’s Jack Wright makes. Wright was impressive at Brands Hatch last month and if he can repeat that form, he could well be on the podium.

In addition to the Aprilia RS Superteen Championship, the GP 250s and the Super Sidecars, there will be racing for the Supersports, where Hull’s Richie Welsh will be a serious threat to championship leader Andy Sprake in the 400cc category.

Tickets for the weekend cost £12 per adult per day, with children aged 12 and under getting in free. Parking and paddock access are also free.
