ENJOY SHORTER JOURNEY TIMES ON TWO WHEELS SAYS MOTOR CYCLE INDUSTRY ASSOCIATION
26 July 2004 - Motor Cycle Industry Association Ltd
The Motor Cycle Industry Association (MCI) is encouraging people to travel on a motorbike or scooterto enjoy the benefits of the shorter journey times that biking brings.
Research, conducted on behalf of the MCI has shown that people value freedom, fun, cheaper travel costs and quicker travel times when making travel decisions. Nearly 40% of non-bike riders who said they would consider buying a motorcycle chose quicker journey times as the main reason. Young people (18-25 years), are the group who consider getting from A to B as the main reason they would consider buying a bike or scooter with over a quarter (26%) choosing this option. Regional variations were extreme with 8% of people in Bristol choosing faster travel times compared to 40% in Nottingham. The Scots, were the other group that rated travel convenience highly with 29% of people choosing this reason. Further research by the Despatch Association (DA) has found that travelling on a two-wheeled machine around London is quicker than four wheels. The Comparative Journey Times Survey (CJTS) used six routes in London and then a comparison of journey times for a four wheel vehicle and a motorcycle are drawn. For example, one route in 1996, a van took seventeen minutes and the bike took six minutes – a nine minute difference. On the same route in 2004 the van took sixteen minutes and the bike took eleven. The Comparative Journey Time Survey (CJTS), was originally started when the Department for Transport refused to include Powered Two Wheelers (PTW) in their own survey. The process began asa one off, but repeating the exercise four and eight years later gave an insight into the effects of changes over the years. Craig Carey-Clinch, MCI Director of Public Affairs said “Riding a bike or scooter has economic, social and environmental benefits -- and it''s fun too. It takes less time to get to work by bike than it does by car and it’s possible to halve your journey time in London. This gives you more time to live life, and less time being a prisoner of Britain''s gridlocked rush-hour roads. So the message is clear -- get on your bike and join the biking revolution.”
