SPEEDWAY UPDATE
12 August 2005 - British Speedway Promoters Association

BIRMINGHAM could have a Premier League speedway team as early as next season.

Kidderminster businessman Tony Mole, who currently owns Elite League title favourites Belle Vue and Premier League Workington, has submitted a planning application to Birmingham Coty Council for the bikes to roar at Perry Barr Greyhound Stadium. It would mean speedway returning to the city for the first time since 1986 when the Brummies folded after two troubled seasons at the Bordesley Green Wheels complex. Mole has revealed plans for Wednesday night racing in the Premier League, subject to a successful application by October 31. He said: ''I am confident and I base that on the information I have received from various parties. ''The application has come from my company, R&D Aggregates Limited, and subject to receiving planning consent prior to October 31 this year we will make an application to the BSPA for membership of the Premier League in 2006. ''The racenight will be a Wednesday at 7.30pm and March 8 is the target for opening night with the Alan Hunt Memorial Cup. ''Our alternative raceday will be Bank Holiday Monday afternoons and Good Friday. I have had the total support of Chris Van Straaten at Wolverhampton in my efforts to revive the Brummies and I would like to put on record my appreciation for that. ''The team will be known as the Brummies with the traditional colours of a red B on a yellow background - and we will expect to track a strong team.''
