SPEEDWAY WEEKLY ROUND-UP
09 August 2005 - British Speedway Promoters Association
ARENA-ESSEX promoter Ronnie Russell is backing new signing Adam Skornicki to make a big impression at Purfleet during the closing stages of the season.
ELITE LEAGUE LATEST. Russell said: ''The last time he raced here was for Wolverhampton at the end of June and he showed what he had to offer by scoring 12+1 from his five rides. ''During his run of six matches for Wolves he averaged over seven points per meeting and that is well in excess of the average he joins us with.'' BELLE VUE boss Ian Thomas had high praise for veteran Andy Smith who piled up a score of 17 (paid 18) as the Aces maintained top spot with a win over Oxford. Thomas said: ''We worked him hard by giving him seven races, and he did the business. He said he''d benefited from a rest and what he did was incredible. ''He beat two former World Champions in Billy Hamill and Greg Hancock and I had no hesitation about giving him so many rides.'' COVENTRY co-boss Peter Oakes says that the Bees are in with a realistic chance of overhauling Poole to secure second place in the Elite League and a home play-off semi. Oakes said: ''It''s very much all to ride for because we''ve both had the same number of home meetings so it could be all about what happens away. ''The ideal for us would be to win down there and take two points off them, which I think we are more than capable of doing with a full team - and if we did that, we would be the front-runners.'' EASTBOURNE boss Jon Cook was delighted that the Eagles recovered a 17-point deficit to take the bonus point against Ipswich, but is wary of his team''s next fixture. Cook said: ''It was a fantastic last-heat 5-1 from Nicki Pedersen and Adam Shields and it strengthens our bid for a play-off place. ''But our sternest test is yet to come because Wolverhampton are unbeaten at Arlington in two years.'' IPSWICH team manager Mike Smillie was in philosophical mood after the Witches lost further ground in the Elite League with a defeat at Eastbourne. Smillie said: ''We struggled and it was just one of those nights. Chris Louis blew his engine which was typical of the way things went. ''We were still in with a chance of the bonus at the end and at least we were better than we were at Belle Vue.'' OXFORD boss Nigel Wagstaff is organising a reunion of the legendary 1985 and 86 Cheetahs teams. The likes of Andy Grahame, Marvyn Cox and Hans Nielsen are expected to attend on Thursday September 15 with a golf day and dinner planned for the following day. Wagstaff said: ''Hans has already said yes and he is expected to bring Jens Rasmussen over with him. I''m sure it will be a great occasion. ''I''ll be revealing more details in due course, but it''s looking good and for Troy Butler to fly from Australia is superb.'' PETERBOROUGH boss Trevor Swales says the club will find a solution to their fixture congestion after being particularly unfortunate with rain-offs this season. Swales said: ''Staging a double-header is not ideal but it is certainly the route we would go down rather than hold a home meeting at another track. ''Last year it didn''t have a great deal of importance because we had no chance of making the play-offs but this season we are in the hunt and every point will count.'' NEW Poole signing Tomas Suchanek says he was not expecting to get the call from the reigning Champions to bolster their scoring in the reserve berth. Suchanek said: ''I didn''t think about the Elite League, only the Premier League, so it was a great surprise for me when Poole came in. ''I am very lucky to be joining Poole and I want to score the most points that I can. Poole are a very good team with very good riders and I will try my best for them.'' SWINDON manager Alun Rossiter is concerned that the Robins are falling off the pace in the race for a top four finishing position in the Elite League. Rossiter said: ''I certainly haven''t given up hope of a play-off spot but it will be very difficult and Eastbourne have a much easier run-in than us. ''Realistically we must pick up some away wins and rider performances must improve. It needs the top three to all be firing and some decent back-up for them.'' DAVID Howe hit top form on Monday night with a 14-point haul, including four race wins, as Wolverhampton took both match and bonus points against Swindon. Howe won races against both Leigh Adams and Lee Richardson before chasing and passing Richardson for second place right at the end of Heat 15. He said: ''Obviously the season didn''t start the way I had hoped, but I''ve made changes and in the last few weeks everything has really come good.'' PREMIER LEAGUE LATEST. BERWICK boss Peter Waite wants to stay on top of the Premier League for as long as possible after returning to the summit with a home win over Newcastle. Waite said: ''We realy have to knuckle down and make sure we get the best out of all the remaining matches in order to try to stay up there a bit longer.'' EDINBURGH promoter John Campbell was pleased that Matthew Wethers accepted the invitation to return to the Monarchs team to replace the injured Cameron Woodward. Campbell said: ''As soon as I asked Matthew if he wanted to be a Monarch again he answered with one of the biggest smiles I''ve seen.'' EXETER promoter David Short says the Falcons are devastated by the loss of reserve Ben Barker, who suffered horrific thigh and leg injuries at Stoke last week. Short said: ''He was going very well for us but this is an extremely bad injury. He will be out for the rest of the season but he''s young so will heal relatively quickly.'' GLASGOW co-promoter Alan Dick is urging Tigers fans to turn out in force for the remainder of the season after a worrying dip in attendances. Dick said: ''If there isn''t an improvement it could be that we have to start looking at cutting the costs of the team which inevitably means cutting the quality, and we don''t want to go down that road.'' HULL''S injured reserve Joel Parsons wants to put his nightmare 2005 season behind him and start afresh next year. Parsons said: ''Eric Boocock told me to concentrate on getting fit for next season and he said I won''t have a year like this one next year. I should be able to walk in a month and I''ll be ready for next year.'' ISLE OF WIGHT co-promoter Dave Pavitt says that the club could not afford to turn down the offer they received from Poole for young Czech rider Tomas Suchanek. Pavitt said: ''We''d have preferred to have kept hold of Tomas for a while longer as be was beginning to come into his own, but Poole made us an offer we simply couldn''t refuse.'' KING''S LYNN manager Rob Lyon has defended the Stars'' move to release Matthew Wethers in favour of young German Tommy Stange. Lyons said: ''I know that some people will be questioning this move, but Tommy will get better every week. The KO Cup is not until September and by then he will have ten League meetings under his belt.'' NEWCASTLE manager George English had praise for James Grieves, who rode through the pain barrier to help the Diamonds to a home win over Stoke. English said: ''James was in pain and discomfort from his crash eight days earlier at Stoke but his vital point in Heat 13 set us up nicely to go for the jugular in the last two heats.'' NEWPORT promoter Tim Stone shares the frustration of the clubs supporters at the Wasps'' lack of form, but points to a lack of options to rectify the position. Stone said: ''I apologised to the fans in the local paper, and what else could I do? I feel it more than anyone but public theatricals are not going to help the situation.'' READING''S Zdenek Simota has given thanks to the injured Steve Masters who has helped the Czech through some mechanical problems. Simota said: ''Steve has kindly offered to lend me one of his engines, which has come as a big boost and I really do appreciate his help.'' RYE HOUSE promoter Len Silver was a proud man after the Rockets defeated Workington in the Premier Trophy Final to win the club''s first silverware since 1980. Silver said: ''I''m absolutely delighted for the riders, staff and especially our supporters. 25 years is a long time but the atmosphere made it worth the wait!'' SHEFFIELD boss Neil Machin reckons his foursome will be amongst the favourites for the Premier League Fours Championship at Workington on August 20. Machin said: ''Because of our liking for the big, fast track that is Workington we will be up there amongst the favourites to win the meeting. ''We won it with both Sean and Andre in 1999 and 2000 so they know what it''s all about and they''ll get the other lads up for this.'' SOMERSET boss Mick Bell reckons his team are capable of winning one of their three away matches on the northern tour this weekend. They go to Edinburgh on Friday, followed by Berwick on Saturday and Newcastle on Sunday. Bell said: ''I''m looking forward to the trip, I always enjoy going on tour and this is a good one for us. ''All three meetings are going to be hard but there is no doubt we have confidence and a positive attitude which I hope will help us push forward and get that elusive away win.'' RECENT Stoke signing Adam Allott feels he is getting to grips with his new home base at Loomer Road after scoring paid nine against Sheffield. Allott said: ''I''m starting to find a set-up that works around here and the rest of the team have helped me with my confidence.'' WORKINGTON boss Graham Drury has revealed his frustration at a lack of success in the transfer market. He said: ''I verbally agreed terms with a rider last Thursday only to be told he would be going elsewhere, I couldn''t believe it! ''Then I did a deal with another rider who has just come out of a Premier League team but then he turned around and told me he''d suffered a workshop accident and had a suspected broken foot.''
