THE DERBY PHOENIX MOTOR CYCLE CLUB HEADS TO CADWELL PARK THIS WEEKEND (AUGUST 13/14)
09 August 2005 - MotorSport Vision
A packed weekend of racing is expected around a circuit which is one of the favourite circuits for many riders, due to its unique nature with a great deal of elevation change.
The Formula 400 races were nothing if not entertaining in their last round at Snetterton, with Alan Percival taking the championship lead as Steve Smith was out with injury. Jim Blackbourn, from Lincoln, should pose a threat to the championship contenders on his Yamaha RRSSP which, although not as popular as the Kawasakis and Hondas, can be a pacesetter. Competing against the 400s will be many 250cc two-strokes, including Humberston’s Alan Armour, who will be looking for the advantage that comes from racing on your home circuit. In the ‘Big Guns’ race, Darron Bellworthy consolidated his championship lead in both the Allcomers and 1300cc four-stroke classes, despite losing out in the race to Chris Firmin and Martin Appleyard. Doncaster’s Dean MacAlister is expected to be strong on his 1-litre Suzuki, but had a problem with the forks on his machine during practice last time out and didn’t even make it to qualifying. The Fomula 600 event will be one of the centres of attention, with the second race on Saturday being dubbed the ‘Ken Barker Memorial Race’ in honour of a local enthusiast who died in 2000. Ken, who lived near Louth, spent over 20 years visiting Cadwell Park as either a spectator or marshal, and this will be the fifth time a race has been named in his honour. The second race for these machines on Sunday will be in honour of Gavin Feighery, who died last August at the Manx TT course on the Isle of Man. In addition to the Thunderbikes, for 750cc four-cylinder machines and 1000cc twins, there will be action for sidecars with the Neil Miles Sidecar Trophy. There will also be action for the Steel Frames 600 class, where Andy Daniels has been completely dominant this season – the question is whether Mick Allitt can improve on his results so far this season, having finished second to Daniels 15 times this year. Tickets cost £12 per adult with children aged 12 and under admitted free of charge. Parking and paddock access is also free.
