NO REWARD FOR JONES’ EFFORT
26 July 2004 - Triumph ValMoto
Triumph Valmoto suffered misfortune again on Sunday when Craig Jones crashed out of the 22-lap Motorcycle News Supersport Cup race at Donington Park.
The talented 19-year-old once again got the Dayton 600 off to a strong start but he lost control on lap four after trying too hard. The weather on Sunday remained warm and sunny throughout the MotoGP races at the Leicestershire circuit, but the Supersport contenders were again consigned to a greasy track and difficult conditions when the heavens opened just before the late afternoon race. In a race that saw numerous riders crash out, the Triumph Valmoto team looked set for an almost guaranteed podium in front of the 100,000-strong crowd, but Jones’ enthusiasm got the better of him at an early stage in the race. He had been running in sixth place and - even after slipping back to seventh - was only just behind the pack of leaders. However, after being overtaken and losing his sixth place, Jones started to push harder rather than continue at the steady pace that he had been putting in. This proved detrimental on lap four when the 19-year-old lost control of his Triumph Valmoto Daytona 600 at Donington Park’s old hairpin section. It was a disappointing and premature end to the one-off motorsport event for the whole team. Team manager Jack Valentine said: “Crashing out was disappointing for Craig, but it was just due to a little bit of over enthusiasm on his part to get a good result for the team. I was almost 100 per cent sure that we could finish on the podium at Donington but it wasn’t meant to be. It has been good set-up practice for the British Supersport Championship finale, which is held here later in the year though.”
