SHEFFIELD SPEEDWAY
22 July 2004 - British Speedway Promoters Association

SHEFFIELD Pirtek Tigers will take a 20-point lead to Exeter on Monday for the second leg of their Knockout Cup quarter-final tie after a 57-37 win at Owlerton on Thursday.

The result has left the cup tie on a knife-edge although Exeter will fancy their chances after demolishing Sheffield in a Premier Trophy tie at the
County Ground last month.

Both Andre Compton and Andrew Moore were unbeaten by an opposing rider for Sheffield with 14+1 scores each and Ricky Ashworth dropped only one-point as he scored 11.

Graeme Gordon was the top Exeter rider with 11 including an impressive victory over Ashworth in Heat 14. Sheffield''s lead should, however, have been greater but for a staggering four retirements, a tapes exclusion and a fall. But Exeter were also forced into the meeting without reserves Mark
Simmonds and Nick Simmons. Simmonds broke down on the M5 earlier in the day and ran out of time in a bid to get his machinery to the track and youngster Simmons is still suffering from injury.

Sheffield youngsters David Speight and Benji Compton deputised and scored five-points between them.

TIGERS: Andrew Moore 14+1, Andre Compton 14+1, Ricky Ashworth 11, Ben
Wilson 7, Richard Hall 5+2, Craig Watson 4, James Birkinshaw 2+1.

EXETER: Graeme Gordon 11, Craig Boyce 10, Seemond Stephens 4+1, Roger Lobb
4+1, Michael Coles 3+1, Benji Compton 3, David Speight 2+1.
