CYRIL DESPRES FASTEST ON TODAYS STAGE
02 August 2005 - KTM-Sportmotorcycles AG

Red Bull Romaniacs: 2nd stage

Cyril Despres is the first rider to reach the finish line after a very long and exhausting race day! It took the French KTM factory rider about 8 hours to conquer todays very technical stage through the Fagaras mountains and the Sadu valley.

Second after Despres was German rider Gerhard Forster on his Beta four stroke, who delivered an excellent performance throughout the whole day. Forster could pass Darryl Curtis (RSA) early on the day’s stage and kept charging after Cyril Despres until he had to repair his cooler at a fuel stop.

Amongst the few riders who have passed the finish line at press time (16:30 local time) were Stefan Zwerenz (GER, KTM), Colomban Loic (FRA, Husqvarna), Gregg Godfrey (USA, KTM) and Bernd Hupfauf (AUT, KTM) who decided to call it a day after a nasty crash.

Some riders had problems with the GPS navigation and missed some checkpoints along the racetrack.

US rider Jared Willardsen broke his arm when he crashed hard early on today’s stage.

TEAM-CLASS: STILL FIGHTING IN THE WOODS

The team riders had to handle a slightly shorter track than the Pros today, but they had their fair share of gnarly Enduro terrain as well. The extremely demanding first part of the track in the Fagaras mountains took it’s toll on the amateurs, as some of the teams spent hours at the very technical uphill sections...

At press time, only four teams reached the finish in Sibiu: Team Flatout Fightclub (AUT)
Team Schiedel/Husqvarna Maierhofer (AUT)
Team Dust’N Dirt (GER)
Team Highlander (GER)
Erzbergrodeo race promotor Karl Katoch (AUT) from Team OMMA RodeoX had a nasty collision with a tree trunk 20 km after the start and had to face an open fracture of one of his toes. Unfortunately, the crash ended all race ambitions for the Austrian team for this year’s Red Bull Romaniacs.

Mexican rider Jose Luis Perez and his new found teampartner Christos Paterakis (GR) had some problems with overheating engines on their bikes, so the guys called it quits early in the afternoon. Tomorrow the guys will be again on their way, even though they won’t play any major role in the results due to the time penalty they’ve received.
