SPEEDWAY: WEEKLY ROUND-UP
02 August 2005 - British Speedway Promoters Association
ADAM Skornicki has joined Arena Essex in a loan deal from Wolverhampton until the end of the season.
ELITE LEAGUE LATEST. Skornicki, a big favourite at Monmore Green, replaces injured American Josh Larsen in the Hammers side and will make his home debut on August 17. Hammers boss Ronnie Russell said: ''Adam is a quality rider and I''m sure he will quickly become a firm favourite with the supporters.'' CURRENT World Champion Jason Crump says that he made the right decision to remain with Belle Vue last winter, with the Aces now riding high at the top of the Elite League. Crump said: ''I was ready to move on at the end of last season, but Ian Thomas talked me into staying and I''m glad I did. ''I haven''t won as much at club level as I''d have liked, and I want to be riding in the big end-of-season meetings. This year we''ve a chance of doing that and are very competitive.'' COVENTRY co-boss Peter Oakes is delighted with the progress of reserve Martin Smolinski, who enhanced his reputation with a paid maximum against Oxford. Oakes said: ''It was terrific to see Martin''s performance because he has put so much effort into every meeting he has ridden. It''s a rich reward for him to go out and beat someone of the calibre of Billy Hamill. ''The work he has put in is paying off, and I think he can carry it on between now and the end of the season.'' EASTBOURNE star David Norris made a successful return to the track for the Eagles against Swindon, but confirmed that he is not fit for World Cup duty. Norris said: ''It hurts to have to say it, but most of the problem was fitness. Two laps and I was tired, but my equipment was fantastic. I am not even race-rusty, I am just unfit. ''When injuries like this happen, the youngsters get their chance and that is what British Speedway needs. It is the perfect time for them to step in and if I can help them in any way I will.'' IPSWICH director Magda Louis is frustrated by the Witches'' recent adverse results at home, and has warned the team that she expects an improvement. She said: ''The sad thing is that if all our riders had been on song we would have beaten Belle Vue, Peterborough and Swindon and our season would be looking different. ''Pepe Protasiewicz in particular has dropped his form dramatically, he knows he is letting us down and no-one is more fed up with it than him. We need him to come good.'' OXFORD''S Travis McGowan insists the club have one eye on next season already. He said: ''We''re all looking towards next season when hopefully we can have a team of settled riders without any injury problems. It can''t be another season like this one, surely.'' PETERBOROUGH promoter Colin Horton is pleased with the progress which has been made during his two months at the helm so far. Horton said: ''I have to admit the process of steadying the ship has taken longer than I imagined, but now the whole place is buzzing. Everyone is really optimistic. ''People who haven''t been for a few years are coming up to me at home meetings telling me what a great time they have had and I receive e-mails from fans who are over the moon at the way the club is going.'' POOLE promoter Matt Ford says that new signing Tomas Suchanek is a rider with significant potential for the future. Ford said: ''Tomas is someone we have been looking at for a couple of years but couldn''t fit into our side on a new foreigners average of 4.50. ''He is now able to come in on 3.00 having completed 12 fixtures for the Isle of Wight and while I wouldn''t expect too much away from home, I would be surprised if he doesn''t pick up four or five points at home.'' SWINDON captain Leigh Adams says that the Robins need to regroup after a disastrous week which has hampered their chances in both League and Cup. Adams said: ''It has been an absolute nightmare over the last week or so. Our involvement in the Cup has realistically gone and it is far more difficult to make the play-offs. ''We brought in Peter Ljung and it blew back in our faces with his problems and the home loss to Eastbourne. But we still have a chance, it will be tough but not impossible.'' WOLVERHAMPTON star Mikael Max has talked about the crash in a Swedish League meeting which left him nursing a broken thigh and wrist. Max said: ''I broke my leg on the handlebars I think and then went into the fence, which was obviously nasty. ''As it threw the top of my body from the top of the bike and through the fence it was a high impact on my arm as well, that''s when I broke the wrist.'' PREMIER LEAGUE LATEST... BERWICK promoter Peter Waite refused to be downbeat after losing out to close rivals Newcastle on Sunday as the Bandits were forced to field a weakened team. Waite said: ''The best team on the night won and it''s a blow to us, but not the end of our League aspirations. It''s time to regroup again and get back to winning.'' EDINBURGH star Ross Brady is hoping for good news from his surgeon later this week as he looks to return from a broken ankle as soon as it is sensible to do so. Brady said: ''It has been very frustrating not riding, as I was going through a good show before the crash. I don''t want to rush back too soon, that would be silly.'' EXETER promoter David Short says that progress has been made in the club''s battle to continue in operation in the immediate future, and that they could be racing next season. Short said: ''The situation is looking much more positive than it did 10 days ago, things are moving steadily forward and our attendance figures are well up which proves that the fans really want speedway to continue.'' GLASGOW will be pleased to see the back of Premier League leaders Rye House, who have won twice at the Ashfield circuit on consecutive weeks. The Tigers were put out of the Knockout Cup by the Rockets and then slipped to their third home defeat in the League this season last weekend. HULL skipper Paul Thorp says the next few weeks are crucial to the club''s chances of qualifying for the end of season Young Shield play-offs. Thorp said: ''It''s make or break time for us with a load of meetings coming up. We have to get into the play-offs, otherwise the season will be pretty fruitless.'' THE Isle of Wight have signed Polish rider Krzysztof Stojanowski as a replacement for Poole-bound Tomas Suchanek. He will make his debut against Somerset on Thursday as the Islanders look to make use of their home matches in hand to climb the Premier League table. MATTHEW Wethers is returning to the King''s Lynn team after injury this week, and ironically makes his comeback against his parent club Edinburgh. Stars team boss Rob Lyon said: ''It''s really good to see Matthew returning as he is really determined to put one over his old team-mates.'' NEWCASTLE boss George English was delighted to record a win over high-flying Berwick, despite being without James Grieves and Phil Morris who were injured the previous night. English said: ''We really did have serious misgivings beforehand but it was a truly magnificent performance and our guest Paul Thorp was superb.'' NEWPORT promoter Tim Stone pointed to the loss of Mads Korneliussen as the main reason for the Wasps'' home defeat by Sheffield. Stone said: ''Although he won his first ride you could see that he was a bit rigid and in discomfort. He then couldn''t lift his arm and had to withdraw, and Mads would normally be good for 12 points at home.'' READING team boss Tim Sugar was delighted with the outcome of the Racers'' first leg Cup tie at Isle of Wight which resulted in just a two point defeat. Sugar said: ''Had the last two heats gone the Isle of Wight''s way then we could have been facing a deficit of around 18 points so now we must stand a very good chance.'' RYE HOUSE have gone top of the Premier League after taking the aggregate bonus point from their weekend clashes with Berwick and then winning at Glasgow. The Rockets are now preparing for the first team silverware of the season to be decided as they face Workington over two legs this weekend in the Premier Trophy Final. SHEFFIELD duo Ben Wilson and Kyle Legault played their part in a crucial away win over Newport - but only after a supporter rescued them from Strensham Services! Boss Neil Machin said: ''They were travelling down together when the van broke down. They had only their racing attire and a supporter, Dave Green, picked them up, got them to Newport and then Ricky Ashworth and Richard Hall gave them the use of their spare bikes!'' SOMERSET newboy Trevor Harding is thrilled with his move to the Oak Tree Arena. He said: ''It''s a well run club and the track is one of my favourites. I''ve had good meetings against Somerset in the past and now I want to help the team by scoring well for them, thankfully I''ve made a good start.'' STOKE promoter Dave Tattum praised the efforts of veteran Alan Mogridge as the Potters secured the bonus point from their Premier League clashes with Workington. Tattum said: ''Moggo was brilliant over the two meetings, but it was a real team effort and I thought the youngsters at reserve both did cracking jobs too, and we got what we deserved.'' WORKINGTON have named Somerset''s Magnus Zetterstrom as their star guest for Carl Stonehewer in this weekend''s Premier Trophy Final with Rye House. Boss Graham Drury said: ''I felt it was important to have the same guest for both meetings if at all possible and Magnus fits the bill.'' FIXTURE PICTURE...
