BEST RESULT OF FOURTH FOR KTM IN SHOWERY BELGIUM
31 July 2005 - KTM-Sportmotorcycles AG

David Philippaerts missed out on his first MX2 podium since the British GP in early June by one point this afternoon at Nismes for the Grand Prix of Wallonie, the twelfth round of seventeen in the 2005 FIM Motocross World Championship.

A chilly and showery race day greeted the riders and 21,000 spectators (weekend figured) near the French border in southern Belgium and the terrain was a tricky and slippery challenge.

Philippaerts was involved in a heated but exciting scrap for second position during the first MX2 moto and withheld the challenges of Andrew McFarlane and Davide Guarneri to clinch the runner-spot. Both Carl Nunn and Marc de Reuver started badly. Nunn was running out of the points and suffered stomach cramps that forced his retirement. De Reuver was poised to break into the top ten when he fell before remounting and then hit the dirt again shortly after, this time unable to carry on. Philippaerts could not get away well in the second race and was seventeenth on the first lap. He regained ten positions but could not climb into sixth spot that would have given him third overall. Marc de Reuver had another crash and finished one place outside of the points while Nunn was disappointed with sixteenth even though he had to come back from last after colliding with another rider on the second corner.

Steve Ramon finished seventh overall in the MX1 class with moto scores of sixth and eighth. The Belgian fought with Stefan Everts for fifth place in the first outing and was the recipient of some poor luck when he was slowed by a group crash on the second corner in moto2. His team-mate Ben Townley had a dramatic set of motos. The Kiwi slipped out of fifth position in race one, eventually taking seventh and then fell three times due to rear brake trouble in the second moto (possibly sustained in the same early pile-up that claimed Josh Coppins and Pascal Leuret and delayed Ramon) before easing the KTM 450 SXF to thirteenth by the chequered flag.

Townley remains third despite one of his lowest points scores of the season but is staring at a huge deficit of 68 to Josh Coppins in second place. Ramon is sixth, a hefty distance in front of Pascal Leuret and only fourteen points from Mickael Pichon, who won today from Coppins and Everts. Philippaerts is currently fourth in the standings and needs 37 points to close down Alessio Chiodi in third. Nunn has slipped back from eighth to tenth.

The thirteenth stop of the FIM Motocross World Championships will take place in just seven days time at the Loket circuit for the Grand Prix of Czech Republic.

Ben Townley:
“In the first race I had a bad start but came through to fifth I think before I went down in a silly crash. I fought back strong and passed a lot of riders and ended up seventh but it was a bad race because I didn’t ride well at the beginning. I started badly again in the second moto and did not have a rear brake from the second corner. I went down three times because I was coming into the corners and could not stop. I mistimed the starts today and I don’t understand how because I was doing them so well during the week.”

Steve Ramon:
“The overall result was not so good. I started OK in the first moto and was third but then Leuret made a little mistake in front of me and I had to brake, letting four or five riders go past. My riding was good and then Stefan overtook me but I kept close to him and watched his lines, seeing where I was faster and slower. I planned to get him on the last lap because I knew I had a better line around the back but I lost a bit of time near the end and he was finally just a little bit too far away. In the second race my start was worse and then there was a pile-up and I was again behind it! Someone hit me on my side. It was raining hard then and the track was very slippery and difficult, there was not much traction. It was not so bad to finish eighth if you look where I was on the first lap.”

David Philippaerts:
“One race was perfect today! My physical condition is good but the track was very difficult for me this afternoon. In the second moto my start was bad and a rider crashed in front of me which dropped me back. There was no podium today but the result was ok!”

Carl Nunn:
“I had really bad stomach cramps in the first moto. I don’t know what happened but I think I ate something bad in the morning. I was feeling rough and had too much pain in the first race. In the second moto I started well but messed up the first turn and then hit Shaun Simpson, who was out of control, in the second turn and went down. I got going again but could only come back so far. It is disappointing and when I seem to have a bad weekend it is really a bad weekend.”

Marc de Reuver:
“It was not the easiest track to make a comeback! I rode too tight yesterday and my qualifying position was not that good. In the first heat I was missing the speed in the first few laps after the start; they were passing me everywhere! I started to come back but then my front washed out. In the second heat I got out of the gate well and if I had held it a bit longer I would have been third. I lost a couple of places but I was riding OK until I came to the big step-down one lap when I made a little mistake at the top and the front wheel went again. I didn’t hurt myself and managed to get going but it is difficult when there is nobody in front of me. Cairoli and Melotte lapped me and I was working hard to stay with them and I could do it for four laps. I feel a little tired now but for the second race I am happy with how I rode.”
