KALLIO ON POLE AGAIN FOR RED BULL KTM
30 July 2005 - KTM-Sportmotorcycles AG

Flying Finn Mika Kallio was again the master of qualifying when he claimed his seventh pole position of the season at the Sachsenring today.

Kallio timed his fastest lap perfectly, beginning his fast run with just 13 seconds remaining in the one hour session. On his 18th and final lap Kallio posted a time of 1’27.965 to overtake the late challenge from Marco Simoncelli (Aprilia) who was second fastest.

The short, bumpy and rollercoaster Sachsenring is one of Kallio’s favourite tracks and he now starts favourite for tomorrow’s German Grand Prix. Kallio has not won since the Portuguese GP earlier in the season and is keen to commence the summer break with a victory in Germany.

Just two minutes before the session ended Spanish teenager Julian Simon challenged for the front row with the second fastest time but slipped to fifth position on his final lap.

With 40 riders on the track Simon came across heavy traffic as he tried to improve his time for a front row starting spot. Simon, winner of last Sunday’s British GP, improved his time by 1.1s from yesterday’s first qualifying and is confident of a strong showing in the race.

The third rider from the factory Red Bull KTM squad, Hungarian Gabor Talmacsi, qualified in eighth position after a troubled session. Talmacsi, currently equal leader of the world championship going into this race, suffered engine and set-up problems this afternoon.

Weather conditions for final qualifying were sunny and warm but cooler than the tropical temperatures for yesterday’s first qualifying session.

Red Bull ADAC KTM Junior riders Stefan Bradl and Michael Ranseder qualified 26th and 27th respectively. Both improved their times but just over one second compared to first qualifying.

Tomorrow’s 27 lap race is the ninth round of the 125cc world championship.

MIKA KALLIO #36 - First- 1’27.9651

“There was a lot of traffic but i ws able to get some clear space and do my two fast laps riding alone but even on the pole lap I had to back-off once because of a slow rider. The bike was much better today, we lowered the ride height and that improved the problem with front end chatter. I think we have a good race package and I’m confident, I like this track.”

JULIAN SIMON #60 - Fifth - 1’28.375

“My team did a great job with the bike today and improved the set-up a lot from yesterday, especially the gearbox settings. I know think I have a chance to fight for the podium in the race. On my final lap I was faster in the first sector but then came across a slow rider and it was impossible to improve. But it has been good day, i’m happy.”

GABOR TALMACSI #14 - Eighth - 1’28.631

”It was a difficult session, I lost a lot of time with some problems. My engine seemed down on performance and also I tried a different rear suspension link and it did not work for me, so I spent a lot of time in the garage. I think we have learnt many things for the race but it has been a strange day, I’m a little disappointed.”

STEFAN BRADL #77- 26th - 1’29.565

“I would have liked to start closer to the front but there were loot of riders on the he track. I think I can have a got race and Michael and I plan to try and run together to improve our positions.”

MICHAEL RANSEDER #76 - 27th - 1.29.569

“I improved by one second but dropped a couple of places on the grid which shows just how close the times are. I’m hoping for a good race and that Stefan and I can work together to move forward.”
