Motorbike insurance for the over-forties plummets, says leading bike insurer
Not long ago the media was full of stories about 40-somethings buying big bikes to recapture their youth and wrapping them round the first tree. One of the side effects of the trend was that insurance for the bike-buying over-forties skyrocketed. But that effect has now reversed, according to bike insurance specialist Bikesure. So much so that many insurers are dropping rates for forty somethings by anything up to 25% compared to just a few months ago – sometimes even more. “There was a surge of older riders, mainly men, buying superbikes and that led to some real problems,” says Robert Balls of Bikesure. “Bikes have evolved so much in the past few decades and these guys weren’t equipped to handle the technology. “The trend is still there, but nowadays people are aware of the risks. They’ll buy a more reasonable bike to get up to speed on, and only then look into a superbike.” This change means that claims have plummeted and forty-somethings, once the bane of the motorbike insurer, are now the darling. “Where once they ran away, now insurers are falling over themselves to attract older bikers, there’s fierce competition in the market and premiums are tumbling,” says Robert. Which is, of course, great news for the over-forties.
