SPEEDWAY WEEKLY ROUND-UP
26 July 2005 - British Speedway Promoters Association
ARENA-ESSEX anticipate making a change to their team when the new averages come into force in August as they look to make a strong finish to the campaign.
ELITE LEAGUE LATEST Promoter Ronnie Russell said: ''We had hoped to be able to make the signing earlier, but averages have made it impossible so we have to wait. ''We are talking to an Elite League rider who has recently been released by his club to come and replace Josh Larsen on August 1.'' BELLE VUE boss Ian Thomas is celebrating the best week in the Aces'' recent history with a run of three away wins in five days. Thomas said: ''The riders were delighted to pull out the victory at Ipswich and so was I because it was the first time I''d won a match there in 35 years as a promoter and team manager. ''We''re in a very strong position now and I''m proud of the lads but I''m not taking anything for granted at this stage. July has been a great month for us.'' COVENTRY star Billy Janniro says the Bees were satisfied with their night''s work in the end at Peterborough as they maintained their challenge with the aggregate bonus point. Janniro said: ''We came here to win, but Peterborough ride a very good match and it was a good meeting to watch. ''We''re happy with the bonus point, Peterborough were putting the pressure on but we threw Seb Ulamek into Heat 15 and he did the business for us.'' EASTBOURNE co-promoter Jon Cook is looking to involve Trevor Harding in some of the Eagles'' remaining fixtures after impressing against Arena-Essex. Cook said: ''Trevor belongs to King''s Lynn and I have the utmost respect for what Buster Chapman and his son Jonathan have done up there. ''Trevor has just signed a contract to go on loan to Somerset which might confuse the situation, but providing they are OK with it I would like to give him a few more opportunities.'' IPSWICH promoter John Louis has indicated that he is keeping tabs on Berwick''s Carl Wilkinson, who impressed the Witches management in his recent appearances. Louis said: ''Carl has shown his potential and he is one we will keep our eye on. We shall keep him very much in mind and he was one of the plusses in our home draw with Swindon. ''He did not even have a Conference League club at the start of the year but he has made considerable progress.'' OXFORD are set to hand a debut to Polish prospect Pawel Staszek in their home clash with Wolverhampton on Thursday. Silver Machine boss Nigel Wagstaff said: ''He''s been recommended to us by Billy Hamill and we''re hopeful he will be on board for the Wolverhampton meeting. ''He rides for Grudziadz in the Polish First Division and does very well for them. He got a big score last weekend.'' PETERBOROUGH star Sam Ermolenko said that the Panthers had adapted well to track conditions as they ended Coventry''s winning run at the Showground on Monday. Ermolenko said: ''The track was a bit tricky but it rode better than it looked at the beginning and it was good for us as we enjoy a bit of dirt on it. ''I was unlucky in Heat 15 as I felt we could have won that race and taken the bonus point, so that was a little disappointing.'' POOLE boss Neil Middleditch is calling on his team to raise their game if they are to reclaim top spot in the Elite League from in-form Belle Vue. Middleditch said: ''So far I feel we have been muddling through at the top, but unless the boys step up a gear in the coming weeks we may not be able to regain first spot. ''It''s now time for the team to get down to the nitty gritty, step up to the plate and start getting lots of points in the bag.'' SWINDON boss Alun Rossiter knows how tough the Robins'' Knockout Cup semi-final against Belle Vue will be, but says his team have the capability of going through. Rossiter said: ''This represents a great chance for us to reach the Cup Final, and all being well we can keep the scores reasonably close in the first leg. ''The home meeting is going to be a tough one though, as the Aces have so many track specialists in their side, so we will have to be on top of our game.'' WOLVERHAMPTON promoter Chris Van Straaten has admitted his side need to string a good run of results together to reach the play-offs after their home defeat by Belle Vue on Monday. He said: ''There are three teams breaking away right now but the fourth place in the play-offs is still achievable. It will, however, take a remarkable run of results.'' PREMIER LEAGUE LATEST. BERWICK boss Peter Waite is eagerly anticipating this weekend''s top-of-the-table clashes with Rye House. Waite said: ''We are still on course for big things this year, and the end of this week is a big part of it with Rye House home and away. They are two vital matches for us.'' EDINBURGH star Rusty Harrison says the Monarchs must put their Scottish Cup defeat against rivals Glasgow behind them for their next home match against Newcastle. Harrison said: ''It was very disappointing to lose, but they were more determined and rode better although we definitely didn''t enjoy any luck.'' EXETER boss Graeme Gordon hopes that the signing of Sebastian Tresarrieu can inspire several other Falcons riders to turn their current form around. Gordon said: ''I hope this change will give the other riders the little kick up the backside they need. We had to make a change because the team had gone a bit stale.'' GLASGOW skipper Shane Parker says the Tigers are thirsting for revenge in this weekend''s match against Rye House who inflicted a heavy Cup defeat on the Ashfield club. Parker said: ''It is up to us to prove that last week was quite simply a very bad day at the office, and I will be doing my bit to give our supporters a victory to celebrate.'' HULL promoter Paul Hodder insists that the Vikings have a viable future at Craven Park despite recent speculation to the contrary. Hodder said: ''We''re as viable now as we were last season, and the club is not for sale so holding talks would be a pointless waste of time.'' ISLE OF WIGHT reserve Jason Doyle said that his man-of-the-match showing in the Islanders'' win over Sheffield was his best performance for the club. Doyle said: ''I''m really enjoying my first season over here. Everybody has made me and Dad Kevin so very welcome, and hopefully I can continue to improve.'' KING''S LYNN star Kevin Doolan scored his first full maximum in Stars colours as the Norfolk club eased through to the Knockout Cup semi-finals with a win over Exeter. Team manager Rob Lyon said: ''I don''t think I''ve seen Kevin ride so well for us, he was looking so sharp from the gate every time. All the lads were fired up and were determined to go through.'' NEWCASTLE reserve Christian Henry celebrated his return from a knee ligament injury with his first paid maximum in Diamonds colours against the Isle of Wight. Team boss George English said: ''It was great to have Christian back, he was marvellous and his paid maximum is a real boost for him and the team.'' NEWPORT promoter Tim Stone is urging the Wasps supporters to give new Danish signing Henrik Vedel time to settle in at the Hayley Stadium. Stone said: ''I think there will be pressure on Henrik and it''s something of a baptism of fire, but we all believe that this is the right thing to do and I would ask the fans to be a little patient.'' STEVE Masters hopes to make an impression on his return to the Reading team after being out of action since hurting his back at Hull two months ago. Master said: ''I know I am not here for the long run, only until Danny Bird is fit, but if Reading want me to ride then I will. The break has done me some good.'' RYE HOUSE remain on course for a Premier League and Knockout Cup double after a marvellous pair of results at opposite ends of the country. The Rockets routed Glasgow 57-33 at Ashfield to progress in the Cup, and 24 hours later took a vital 46-44 win at Reading to move up to second place in the League table. SHEFFIELD skipper Sean Wilson is targeting a top three place at least for his team. He said: ''We''ve got plenty of meetings left and if we can avoid dropping silly points then we''ll be up there challenging, I''m sure of that.'' SOMERSET boss Mick Bell is backing his side to beat Newport in their home clash with the Wasps on Friday. He said: ''We''ve been on the wrong end of some results against them so far this season but I get the feeling that''s all about to change.'' STOKE manager John Adams knows his team have to improve on their recent away defeat by Somerset if they are to get anything out of their forthcoming clashes with Workington. Adams said: ''We will certainly have to do a lot better. I thought Somerset was a fixture we could have got something out of, but they seemed to want it much more than us.'' WORKINGTON have been rocked by the news that Carl Stonehewer is out for the rest of the season with a serious arm injury sustained in a crash with the Isle of Wight''s Craig Boyce at the weekend. Comets co-boss Denise Drury said: ''There is a strong possibility that Carl will need a skin graft. Nothing is broken but the injury is still very serious.'' FIXTURE PICTURE.
