WOLVERHAMPTON SPEEDWAY
25 July 2005 - British Speedway Promoters Association
WOLVERHAMPTON blew a handy lead at the hands of league leaders Belle Vue in their 39-51 home defeat on Monday.
With just six races remaining the Monmore men looked good for a welcome home win despite the absence of both Mikael Max (thigh) and Magnus Karlsson (shoulder). But the Aces flexed their muscles late on and underlined why they are strongly fancied to complete a rags to riches story by winning the league at the end of the season. The fact that the meeting went ahead at all was a result in itself as some riders were unhappy with track conditions after heavy weekend rain. Referee Mike Posselwhite stood firm and insisted racing should go ahead an hour after the scheduled start time - and it was Wolves who made the better start. Not surprisingly the riders took it easy in the opening couple of heats but Wolves made the breakthrough when David Howe and Steve Johnston got the edge over Joe Screen in Heat 3. Johnston and Howe did it again two races later when they both passed Kenneth Bjerre in the first turn to go on and claim a second successive maximum 5-1 result. And when Freddie Lindgren and Krzysztof Pecyna teamed up for another maximum in Heat 7 the home side enjoyed a comfortable eight-point lead. Belle Vue, however, had two riders who were in unstoppable form in the shape of reigning world champion Jason Crump and brilliant British youngster Simon Stead. Stead dropped just two points from his seven outings and provided some of the most spectacular action on show - both for the fans and the watching TV audience. Crump, meanwhile, who expressed his displeasure at conditions early in the meeting, romped to a full 15-point maximum and, in truth, no Wolverhampton rider got near him. WOLVERHAMPTON: David Howe 8, Steve Johnston 6+3, Charlie Gjedde 6, Freddie Lindgren 6, Krzysztof Pecyna 5+1, Ronnie Correy 4+2, James Grieves 4+2. BELLE VUE: Simon Stead 18+1, Jason Crump 15, Kenneth Bjerre 10+3, Joe Screen 7+1, Jason Lyons 1, Rusty Harrison 0, Andy Smith 0.
