PANICHI TAKES THE GLORY AT DONINGTON
25 July 2005 - BMW Motorrad GB
After three rounds of international race action that has seen three separate riders taste victory, round four of the BMW Motorrad PowerCup series at Donington Park yesterday saw yet another racer – Italian Roberto Panichi – take a win in this year’s championship.
Flying the flag for BMW Motorrad’s Italia Dream Car Team, Panichi was the first rider to cross the finishing line and secure maximum points. The UK’s recent heatwave came to an abrupt end at the weekend as thousands of biking fans watched PowerCup contenders qualify for the MotoGP support race in cool conditions. Early rain on race day left a drying track, forcing riders to take a gamble on tyre choice for their K1200 R race machines. Only Mugello race champion, Sergio Fuertes, opted for a full set of wet tyres before suddenly changing with only seconds to go before the start of the race. Spanish rider, Arturo Tizon, was the first to surge ahead of the pack closely followed by Gwen Giabbani (France) and Roberto Panichi. However, as the race progressed, Tizon was forced to retire, leaving the fight for victory to Panichi and fellow Italian teammate, Mauro Lucchiari. Initially trailing by 2.9 seconds, Lucchiari rode impressively in difficult conditions to finish in second position – just 0.2 seconds behind winner Panichi. Third position was awarded to Belgian Sébastien Legrelle, who despite making the wrong tyre choice, managed to fend of the challenges of Frenchman, Gwen Giabbani, who finished in 4th position. British guest riders competing in round four of the PowerCup included last year’s BoxerCup YoungStar champion, Richard Cooper, along with Ex 250cc GP rider and current Motor Cycle News journalist, Bruce Dunn. In less than one week’s time, more thrilling race action is scheduled as round five of BMW’s PowerCup takes place at Germany’s Sachsenring circuit on Saturday 30 July.
