KALLIO TAKES PROVISIONAL POLE AT DONINGTON
22 July 2005 - KTM-Sportmotorcycles AG

Flying Finn Mika Kallio claimed provisional pole position for the British Grand Prix with the fastest lap at Donington Park today.

The Red Bull KTM rider just beat a light rain shower at the end of the session to surge ahead of Swiss rival Thomas Luthi as the chequered flag came out.

The rain held off for Kallio to set the fastest time with a superb lap in heavy traffic on the compact four kilometre Donington circuit. Kallio was not feeling 100% after developing a painful headache just before the session commenced.

Kallio was joined on the provisional front row by Red Bull KTM teammate Gabor Talmacsi who set the fourth fastest time, just 0.375 behind Kallio.

Talmacsi set his time on his number two bike after a small technical problem sidelined his main race bike.

Spanish teenager Julian Simon made it three KTM riders in the top ten with the seventh fastest time. The top 11 riders qualified within one second of Kallio’s fastest time.

Kallio is aiming to maintain his pace in final qualifying in a bid to claim his fourth consecutive pole position.

The session was run in cool and heavily overcast conditions with a track temperature of just 22 degrees.

MIKA KALLIO #36 - First- 1’37.643

“Just as I started my final lap I noticed some rain on the windscreen but it held off and I was able to do my time despite having to overtake three riders. The engine was very strong and overall out set-up feels good, we just need to make some small adjustments to the front suspension. I don’t know why but I got a bad headache just before the session which distracted me a little.”

GABOR TALMACSI #14 - Fourth - 1’38.018

“I couldn’t continue with my main bike but it wasn’t a big problem, so I’m happy to be fourth fastest. The spare bike was set-up a little different, perhaps a little too soft with the rear suspension, but apart from that everything was OK. I’m confident I can stay on the front row with Mika in final qualifying.”

JULIAN SIMON #60 - Seventh - 1’38.241

“I like this track and enjoy riding here. Everything is going OK, the bike feels fast and like Mika I just need to fine tune the front end for a couple of corners. I’m aiming to stay in the top group in final qualifying tomorrow.”
