HURLEY WINS BRISBANE SX
25 July 2005 - Suzuki Racing
Team Shift Motul Suzuki rider Daryl Hurley claimed a thrilling victory at the opening round of the 2005 Supercross Masters Championship at the Brisbane Entertainment Centre, Queensland on Saturday night.
Off the back of his 2005 Australian Motocross Championship victory, Hurley on his Suzuki RM250 timed his pass on leader Troy Carroll to perfection on the last lap, claiming his first ever indoor Supercross win. Recently-crowned Australian Motocross Champion, Hurley was thrilled with his first win and is now looking to continue his recent scintillating form on his Suzuki for the remaining rounds. He was on the pace all night, winning two of his heats to progress to the semi-final. After winning his semi in the fastest race time, Hurley went into the final with first choice of starting positions. A strong start gave Hurley the holeshot, but a slight error saw Carroll and Anderson pass, placing him third at turn three. He quickly recovered, passing Anderson before setting out after Carroll. The ensuing battle thrilled the huge crowd as Hurley closed in on Carroll, and, on the final lap, made the brilliant pass to take the lead and hold off Carroll through to the chequered flag. ''It was a great race and to win here tonight is a huge confidence boost for the whole team because they''ve all worked extremely hard to make sure we maintained our momentum from winning the Motocross Championship,'' said New Zealander Hurley. ''My Suzuki RM250 was fantastic all night, and to be able to come out and win the opening round is a huge step towards winning the championship.'' Watched by one of the biggest indoor crowds for years at Brisbane, Hurley thrilled the audience with his brilliant pace and amazing final lap. ''It was a great result for Daryl. Motocross is his stronger discipline and he won that National Championship just recently on the Suzuki RM-Z450, so to step onto the two-stroke RM250 and get a win straight up is an outstanding effort and a real confidence booster for the whole team,'' said Team Shift Motul Suzuki Team Manager, Jay Foreman. Danny Ham, aboard the four-stroke Suzuki RM-Z450, unluckily missed out on a place in the eight-man final by less than a second, placing fifth in the second semi-final and then third in the last chance race, where only the top two riders progress to the final. While some poor starts cost Ham a chance to reach the final, he did set the fastest lap time for the entire night, demonstrating the ability and pace he has on his the RM-Z450. In his first Pro Open Supercross appearance for Team Shift Motul Suzuki, Luke Burkhart showed he had the speed to match it with the top riders and would be able to hold his own in a category he has just stepped up to. However, an accident on the triples resulted in Burkhart injuring himself and although not seriously hurt, was unable to continue riding on the day. But the night belonged to Team Shift Motul Suzuki and the under-rated and modest Daryl Hurley, who signalled his intentions to the rest of the field that he is after another championship before the season''s end. ''I''m feeling really confident on the bike at the moment and I can''t wait to get to Adelaide and try to make it two-in-a-row,'' said Hurley. The 2005 Supercross Masters Championship series heads south to the Adelaide Entertainment Centre for round two on Saturday 20 August. 2005 SUPERCROSS MASTERS CHAMPIONSHIP:
