KELSO BIKEFEST A WINNER!
21 July 2004 - BMF
Kelso Bikefest came up with the goods over the weekend when just over 8,000 people attended this increasingly popular event.
Big enough to get a buzz, small enough to remain friendly, Kelso Bikefest, set in Kelso’s superb Springwood Park on the banks of the river Tweed, proved the point with nearly a thousand of the attendees also taking advantage of the four-day camping facilities. Despite early rain, Saturday’s guided Ride-0uts though the fantastic lowlands countryside proved a hit and gave newcomers a real taste for Scotland as a touring venue. Adding a bit of extra zing, the locally based ‘VT10 company’ put on a stunning air display high above the river Tweed performing amazing tricks from ‘barrel rolls’ to heart-stopping stalls. Back on the ground, the UK FMX motorcycle display team took to the arena to run through their very slick display of precision riding, while world record holder Eddie Kidd, still recuperating after his massive 1996 accident, made a guest appearance riding a quad around the main arena to much applause. With traders reporting good business and a club cavalcade attracting some 95 machines, this is certainly an event to watch. Note: Due to high incidence of bike theft in Edinburgh and two bike fatalities (both visitors) in the Kelso area this year, Lothian and Borders police patrols were performing stop-checks on the roads into Kelso. Using a Datatag scanner they checked for stolen bikes and gave road safety advice, but also checked for illegal silencers and small plates. 190 bikes were checked, one found with stolen parts. Other riders were given advice over minor infringements; six others were issued with rectification notices for small plates or illegal exhausts. NEXT BMF EVENT - BMF TAIL END 18th-19th September.
