21 July 2004 - British Speedway Promoters Association
BRITISH champion Joe Screen has been handed a shock recall into Great Britain''s starting line-up for next month''s World Cup.
The Belle Vue rider had previously asked to be left out of the team as he felt his form was not up to standard. But British boss Neil Middleditch said: ''After the test match with Denmark on Monday I reached a decision that I had no alternative but to ask Joe.'' STARTING LINE-UP: Mark Loram, David Norris, Joe Screen, Scott Nicholls, Lee Richardson. OXFORD''S Elite League clash with Swindon this Friday will have a touch of history added. A host of ex-riders from both clubs will be in attendance for the match which falls on the 55th anniversary of the first ever meeting of the two sides. Promoter Nigel Wagstaff said: ''Thanks to the help of Glynn Shailes and Pete Seaton there will be a galaxy of ex-stars on an emotional night.'' SHEFFIELD co-promoter Neil Machin believes the Knockout Cup clash with Exeter represents the club''s best chance of silverware. Tigers face the Falcons in the first leg at Owlerton on Thursday with the return in Devon next Monday. Newport''s Craig Watson deputises for Sean Wilson. Machin said: ''These are massive meetings for us. The league is looking a distant dream so we''re very much up for the cup!''
