SPEED CAMERAS: THE BUBBLE HAS FINALLY BURST
15 July 2005 - Safe Speed

The Times today has revealed that the DfT has put a block on 500 proposed new speed cameras.

Safe Speed is absolutely delighted to see the DfT finally recognising that speed cameras haven''t delivered the expected road safety results.

Safe Speed has been providing information since 2001 proving that speed cameras ''don''t work'' to deliver road safety.

Paul Smith, founder of the Safe Speed road safety campaign
(www.safespeed.org.uk) said: ''The story of speed cameras in the UK has been a sorry tale of bad research, false assumptions and spin. Far from saving lives speed cameras have made the roads more dangerous because everyone has been concentrating on the wrong safety factor. Thankfully it appears that the story is coming to an end.''

''Speed cameras have been the wrong solution to a problem that didn''t exist in the first place. Although almost all drivers exceed the speed limit in good conditions, very very few crashes have been caused or contributed to by otherwise responsible motorists exceeding a speed limit. When a joyrider in a stolen car crashes in town at 90mph that''s an entirely different behaviour to Mr Average driving at 80mph on the bypass. Astonishingly the DfT failed to distinguish between these behaviours.''

''The degree of incompetence at the highest level has been so great that the chiefs must resign. That means Alistair Darling and Chief Constable Richard Brunstrom must go.

''The UK''s fine tradition of superior road safety cannot be fully restored while a single speed camera remains active on UK roads. They must go and go quickly.''
