DAKAR HEROES CONTEST DAWN TO DUSK
20 July 2004 - The Adventure Racing Club

Top competitors in the gruelling Dakar Rallye desert race, Alfie Cox and Cyril Despres are coming to the UK to compete in the second largest enduro event in Great Britain – the 12-hour Dawn to Dusk – held near Glyneath in South Wales on the August Bank Holiday weekend (28-29 August).

Cox is one of rally racings biggest heroes and has a long list of racing achievements to his name. The South African has managed to finish six of the seven times that he has competed in the Dakar, including a second place finish in 2002 and has always finished in the top five. Cox has also won the Roof of Africa eight times and secured four gold medals in the international six-day enduro.

The KTM rider has only been to the UK once before: “I have only spent a day in the UK. It was in London and I was on my way to the US, so I can’t say that I have really experienced the country.

“I’m really looking forward to travelling to Wales and racing in the Dawn to Dusk. I have been told for many years by John Deacon, Simon Pavey and Nick Plumb, that Wales is a great place to ride off-road and now I’m going to try it.

“The Dawn to Dusk will be a great opportunity for me to spend time with some of the riders that I race with in the Dakar, but in a more relaxed environment. We are going to race and enjoy the atmosphere as well. I’m really looking forward to it.”

Fellow Dakar team-mate Cyril Despres will also be racing a KTM at the Dawn to Dusk event and is keen to enjoy working with Cox on a more relaxed level.

“I always like trying new things,” said the Frenchman. “I am team-mates with Alfie in the Dakar and it’s the only time I really get to see him. This time we will be able to work together and really enjoy the experience.”

The hard-edged Dakar riders will be competing against some of the world’s best enduro riders, including four-times World Enduro Champion Paul “Fast Eddy” Edmondson (GB) and his team-mate Paul Whibley (NZ). South African Off-Road Championship competitors Spencer and Barry Kriel will also be racing at this year’s Dawn to Dusk, making it a truly international event.

Over 600 riders will be competing in the third annual Dawn to Dusk event, which will be held near Glyneath in South Wales. The main race will take place on Sunday 29 August. A race for the youngsters (ages 10-15) will be held on Saturday (28 August) and there are still competitor places available. Camping is available and additional entertainment will include a band, bar, as well as plenty of activities for the family.
