‘COOPERMAN’ ON A POWERCUP MISSION
11 July 2005 - BMW Motorrad GB

Richard ‘Cooperman’ Cooper, last year’s BMW BoxerCup YoungStar champion, makes his return to one-make racing in the high-octane MotoGP atmosphere of Donington Park on 24 July.

The talented young Nottingham ace is on a mission. As a VIP guest rider in the British round of BMW Motorrad’s tyre-shredding International PowerCup series, the ‘Cooperman’ is determined to give Europe’s campaigners a hard time on his local circuit. Riding the 175 bhp K1200 R race bike for the first time, Richard also wants to show fans what they’ve been missing during the first three rounds of BMW’s prestigious MotoGP support series.

“I’m probably more excited about this race than the fans,” said Richard. “The BoxerCup was a brilliant series and I was delighted to have won the YoungStar title, but the PowerCup is sensational. With speeds of up to 170 mph, concentration and skill have to be at their ultimate level. I can’t wait!”

As part of his race preparations, Richard will test the production version of the K1200 R race bike at a World of BMW Track Day at Rockingham on 20 July. So, if you want to see him ride the bike that’s just arrived in dealer showrooms, places are still available at £149 per person (call 08000 131 282 to book).

Another VIP guest rider, Motor Cycle News journalist and ex-250cc GP rider Bruce Dunn, will line up alongside Cooper and attempt to put MCN’s money and reputation where its mouth is. He is looking forward to getting his knee down for legitimate reasons. “Taking on all the big names in the BMW PowerCup is a heck of a challenge because although I’m leading the Supermono series, the bike I race is lightweight and entirely different,” said Bruce. “It’s a bit scary but it won’t faze me. I intend to give as good as I get. Bring it on!”

The two Brits will have to be at their best if they intend to ruffle a few feathers. Frenchman Gwen Giabbiani won the last PowerCup round at Assen by just 0.091 of a second from Belgium’s Sebastien Legrelle with Mauro Lucchiari of Italy in third. The series though, is currently led by Spain’s Sergio Fuertes on 44 points – just one point ahead of Roberto Panichi of Italy. The cosmopolitan field of regular campaigners will be in no mood to let two upstart Brits disturb the natural order of things – especially in front of an expected crowd of over 100,000. We shall see... the 18-lap race starts at 11.15am.

BMW Motorrad UK will support this prestigious series by giving fans a chance to purchase a range of PowerCup merchandise (shirts, jackets, caps, lanyards etc.) prior to it being sold in dealerships. There will also be an opportunity to register for test rides on the 163 bhp K1200 R production bike (on which the race version is based). All registered entries will be entered in a competition to win an ultra-light SportIntegral carbon helmet worth £845!

The Donington fans can look forward to a cracking day of MotoGP racing and a highly competitive BMW PowerCup round. Don’t be surprised to see MotoGP stars like Rossi, Gibernau and Melandri watching the PowerCup from the pit wall. It’s been such a sensation that everybody who is anybody wants to watch it. Don’t be late.
