WEEKLY BRITISH SPEEDWAY ROUND-UP
05 July 2005 - British Speedway Promoters Association

ARENA-ESSEX boss Ronnie Russell says that poor gating is at the root of the Hammers'' current woes, which have seen them slip to heavy home defeats against both Peterborough and Wolverhampton.

ELITE LEAGUE LATEST.

Russell said: ''Our starting simply wasn''t good enough and my riders are only too aware that they have to get this vital part of their game spot-on.'' BELLE VUE boss Ian Thomas underlined the significance of the Aces'' home win over Elite League leaders Poole, with the battle for play-off places set to go to the wire. Thomas said: ''I had a natter with the lads before the meeting because I felt we had gone off the boil a bit. We couldn''t put our fingers on a reason but this was the kind of performance we wanted. ''Our hopes of finishing in the top two to get the best of the draw in the play-offs all depend on winning our home matches.'' COVENTRY reserve Chris Harris is in the form of his life, with a string of double-figure scores culminating in a paid maximum in the Bees'' 17-point win at Wolverhampton. Harris said: ''I was surprised and shocked to get a paid maximum at Wolves, and to come away with such a big win but all the boys pulled together and it was a brilliant night. ''We were all up for it and worked as a team. My pit crew and mechanics have put a lot of work in to get to where we are.'' EASTBOURNE co-promoter Jon Cook said that the absence of No.1 David Norris was no excuse for the Eagles'' home defeat by Coventry, who were without Andreas Jonsson. Cook said: ''We were beaten by the better team, and are just waiting for David to return. We hope it will be sooner rather than later. ''It was our poorest performance of the season, and it is unacceptable for a visiting reserve to score more than our middle order riders.'' IPSWICH No.1 Hans Andersen offered no excuses after the Witches'' big guns failed to fire to their usual levels at Swindon. Andersen said: ''This must be my worst score of the season for Ipswich and it is not good enough. ''It was surely the first time neither myself or Pepe Protasiewicz were in the nominated riders race, and that tells the story.'' OXFORD boss Nigel Wagstaff is predicting a feast of entertainment at the Betfred Championship of Great Britain Final at Cowley on Sunday. He said: ''Why can''t this meeting be the second most important in this country behind the Grand Prix at Cardiff? ''The national title means a lot to riders and it''s about time we shouted from the rooftops about what a great product we have.'' PETEBOROUGH manager Trevor Swales feels that the club''s new-look line-up will give the Panthers a more balanced feel in the second half of the season. Swales said: ''We''re looking for a strong Heat 1 partnership with PK and Sam, our two heat leaders at the start of the season. ''We feel with Jesper and Henning we have a partnership in which either are capable of winning races and we''ve kept Ales at five. It isn''t set in stone and we''ll see how it pans out.'' POOLE star Krzysztof Kasprzak has apologised to the Pirates fans for missing the Elite League clash with Oxford due to a cancelled flight. Kasprzak said: ''It was probably the worst day of my life, it started going wrong from the moment I got out of bed and just got worse. ''We had a severe electrical storm and with no planes flying into or leaving, I was trapped in Munich and no-one could tell us when we would be taking off.'' SWINDON boss Alun Rossiter says that a win over local rivals Oxford is crucial to the Robins'' chances of finshing the season in a play-off position. Rossiter said: ''I shall be impressing on the lads just how important it is to get one over the old enemy. Nothing but victory will do from this meeting. ''We are handily placed in the league standings at the moment and with a busy spell of fixtures upon us, now is the time to make a big push for a place in the play-offs.'' RONNIE Correy has issued a rally cry to his Wolverhampton colleagues and fans after a thumping defeat by rivals Coventry. He said: ''Just because of one result against Coventry it doesn''t mean our season is over with, we''re gunning for the top four. ''I honestly feel we can do it, we just have to put this result to one side and move on from here.''

PREMIER LEAGUE LATEST.

BERWICK promoter Peter Waite is enjoying life at the top of the Premier League, the Bandits hitting the summit by taking all three points on offer against Glasgow. Waite said: ''Team spirit bought us a well-earned success. It''s a team working together for success, and they really deserve it this season. I am a very proud promoter.'' EDINBURGH have responded to the setback of losing Ross Brady due to injury by signing Danish rider Kristian Lund, who was recently dropped by Newport. Lund said: ''I couldn''t get on with my home track at Newport, but I like Edinburgh and I hope I can do my bit for the team and for the team spirit when I am there.'' EXETER star Mark Lemon described the Falcons'' performance in their 60-31 defeat at Workington in the first leg of the Premier Trophy semi-final as a ''nightmare.'' Lemon said: ''We were particularly poor and have left ourselves a lot of work to do. It''s not impossible to turn it round, but it won''t be easy.'' THE management of Glasgow Speedway have slammed the attitude of 16-year-old Dane Leon Madsen who sensationally quit the club before turning a wheel for the Tigers. Co-promoter Alan Dick said: ''It is far better for everyone that he has no part in our future. Our advice to our fellow promoters would be to be very careful when dealing with him and his advisors.'' HULL look likely to be without Joel Parsons for the rest of the season after the young Australian broke his leg in a crash whilst racing in the Conference League for Mildenhall. Team boss Dave Peet said: ''I feared the worst as the paramedic on site said he thought Joel had broken his leg. I''ve been told he has broken it top and bottom.'' THE Isle of Wight remain bottom of the Premier League table for now, but with matches in hand the Islanders feel they are in a false positions. Narrow away defeats at Exeter, Sheffield and Glasgow in the last week give the Smallbrook Stadium club a good chance of notching several aggregate bonus points. KING''S LYNN promoter Buster Chapman said that a 20-point defeat at Newcastle was in no way a fair reflection of the way his team had approached the meeting. Chapman said: ''I suppose a few of the supporters back home will look at the score and jump to conclusions, but if they had been here they would have been proud of the performance too.'' NEWCASTLE are hoping that Christian Henry will be able to make a rapid return after being injured in the Diamonds'' comfortable home win over King''s Lynn. Manager George English said: ''Christian''s knee injury was the only downer on the night and we sincerly hope to see him back in action in a couple of weeks or so.'' NEWPORT promoter Tim Stone says that Lee Dicken will prove to be a popular signing due to his all-out effort and commitment. Dicken has replaced Kristian Lund, and Stone said: ''He won''t back off if someone runs alongside him and he won''t stay at the back and pootle around. He is a 110% trier.'' READING reserve Richard Wolff celebrated his June rider of the month award by starring in the Racers'' narrow win over high-flying Workington. Wolff was unbeaten from his first six rides and only missed out in Heat 15 as the Smallmead club try to drag themselves out of the lower reaches of the Premier League. RYE HOUSE star Daniel King has been out of action after tearing medial ligaments in his knee after a series of recent crashes. King said: ''The ligaments are torn and there is rubbing on the bone which is causing the pain. I''m very disappointed because I feel I''ve been hitting some decent form.'' SHEFFIELD are hoping to have Richard Hall back in the side within the next 10 days. Hall has been suffering from broken fingers but is now back in light training with a view to making his track return. SOMERSET boss Mick Bell is looking ahead to the rest of the season with optimism. He said: ''We''ve got half the season to go and we have the opportunity to make something of it without a doubt. All the boys are on song, we feel as though we''ve turned the corner and things are getting better for us. STOKE promoter Dave Tattum says that a place in the Young Shield is a realistic target for the Potters despite their injury problems this season. Tattum said: ''Our long term strategy now is to get in the top eight and to take part in the end of season play-offs. It was disappointing to go out of the KO Cup but Berwick were too good over the two legs.'' WORKINGTON have signed Adam Allott as a temporary replacement for Kauko Nieminen. Boss Graham Drury said: ''Adam is in the team until the end of the month and that gives him three home matches and two away, so I think that gives him a fair opportunity to show us what he can do.
