GREATER OPPORTUNITIES FOR WOMEN IN TRANSPORT
01 July 2005 - Transport for London

The Mayor of London, Ken Livingstone welcomed greater opportunities for women in transport at the launch of the London chapter of the Women''s Transportation Seminar (WTS) last night.

The Mayor of London, Ken Livingstone said:
''I''m keen to see women leading in transport roles at all levels in London and the Women''s Transportation Seminar provides the advice, information and support network that will help achieve this change. The Women''s Transportation Seminar is recognised internationally as a role model organisation which is dedicated to the advancement of women in transport.''

The WTS offers women greater exposure to leading UK and international transport organisations along with coaching, mentoring and exchange opportunities. It also provides advice and guidance for women who are considering a career in transport.

Valerie Todd, TfL''s Director of Group Equality and Inclusion and President of WTS London said: ''TfL is well placed to lead this initiative, with our commitment to equality and understanding the transport needs of women. Women are chronically under-represented in the transport industry and we are dedicated to working with organisations across the sector to address this imbalance. The Women''s Transportation Network will help open up the transport industry to women at all levels.''

The Mayor and TfL have actively been encouraging women to consider transport roles since the Mayor took office in 2000. Since this time, for example, there has been a 20% increase in female bus drivers alone.
