BRITISH SUPERBIKE CHAMPIONSHIP SET FOR SCORCHER AT SNETTERTON
29 June 2005 - MotorSport Vision
The British Superbike Championship - the UK’s top bike racing series - heads to Snetterton on July 8- 10 for one of the biggest and fastest events on the Norfolk circuit’s 2005 calendar.
The 2005 Championship has been closer than ever so far and the series heads to Snetterton with everything still to play for. The HM Plant Hondas of Ryuichi Kiyonari and Michael Rutter have been the class of the field so far this year, but even between them result has been tough to call. Snetterton’s BSB weekend will be just as close but will also be one of the most spectacular rounds of the season, as the 200bhp Superbikes will touch 200mph as they blast down the long Revett Straight before braking hard for the Esses. In the opening four rounds of the championship, Japanese rider Kiyonari was flawless and romped to four victories, but a crash in Mallory Park’s fifth round put him out of several rounds and enabled teammate Rutter to take several victories, and the championship lead. Former World Superbike racer Gregorio Lavilla also moved up the order in Kiyonari’s absence, but two stunning victories for the Japanese in the most recent rounds at Knockhill (June 26) put Lavilla down to third. In addition to the main event, a range of support races will be on the bill, with a host of local riders hunting success. Great Yarmouth’s Anthony Cooper will be hoping for a good result at his home track; the privateer Suzuki rider is currently sixth in the National Supersport Cup, with Kieran Murphy (Ipswich) ninth on his Honda in the National Supersport Championship. Christian Attew’s season began in the Virgin Mobile R6 Cup, but the Cromer rider switched to the National Superstock Cup for the last round, and it appears to have been a shrewd move. Now a Suzuki rider, Attew finished second on his debut - less than a second behind the winner - and will be out for victory on home soil. Norwich’s Alex Barkshire is 10th of the privateers in the British 125cc Cup, and will be hoping to improve on his best finish so far, of eighth place. Tickets for the British Superbike Championship weekend cost £8 per adult on practice day (Friday, July 8), £10 per adult on qualifying day (Saturday, July 9) and £25 per adult on race day (Sunday, July 10). Children aged 12 and under go free. Discounted advance tickets are available until Monday, July 4 by calling 0870 950 9000 or by logging on to www.motorsportdirect.co.uk.
