SIDECAR VETERANS LEAD THE WAY AS CLASSIC BIKES HITS BRANDS HATCH
27 June 2005 - MotorSport Vision

Couple in their 60s prove age is no barrier in King of Brands event

This weekend (July 2/3) Brands Hatch will be hosting the CRMC Classic Bike King of Brands meeting, which has a huge entry of solo and sidecar riders, including a Maidstone couple who will prove that you’re only as young as you feel at what promises to be a celebration of classic bike racing.

Maidstone residents Dennis and Christine Etheridge took up sidecar racing in 1987 after supporting their son in his remarkable achievement of 10 British Sidecar Motocross Championship titles. The pair currently lead their class in the CRMC championship on their 750cc Norton outfit. Dennis, 65, is still working as a construction contractor while 60-year old Christine can boast an exotic past; she was trained as an opera singer, and later worked for the royal jewellers, Garrards, where she was pearl stringer to both the Queen and Queen Mother!

Another Kent rider, 42-year old Sheerness prison officer Kevin Tong only returned to racing this year after a 22-year break and in only his second meeting back at Snetterton he achieved two wins in the FRC 350cc GP class on his Spondon Yamaha TZ 350 G. He is looking forward to returning to Brands Hatch and in particular to renewing the friendly rivalry that he had with Kevin Richards way back in ‘83.

Meanwhile, Faversham boatbuilder Kevin Richards is still one of the fastest men around in the FRC and Post Classic classes on his Spondon TZ 350E and will be one to watch out for. As if the packed schedule of races is not enough, there will be a Classic Parade featuring four legends of British road racing, including two former Kings of Brands - Stan Woods on his Suzuki RG500, Ron Chandler on a BSA triple and Tommy Robb and Frank Perris on stunning Phil Morris replicas of 1960’s Works 250 Honda and Yamaha. As an added treat, former multiple World Champion Phil Read will be competing on a 500 Goldstar and the exotic Moto Paton 499.

Forget any ideas you may have about Classic Racing – this weekend you will see cut and thrust competition throughout the field in every race and the continuation of some truly intense rivalries.

Tickets cost £12 per adult with children aged 12 and under free. Practice starts at 9am with the racing starting after 10.30am on both days (Saturday July 2 and Sunday July 3). Free parking and paddock access is also available.
