TWO WEEKENDS OF BIKE RACING AT SNETTERTON BEGIN WITH MRO EVENT

Sidecars and Powerbikes head line up ahead of BSB weekend
Snetterton is preparing for two weekends of bike racing action, which begins with this weekend’s Motorcycle Racing Organisation’s meeting, with the British Superbike Championship making its annual visit a week later. The Pirelli Powerbike Championship has provided plenty of action this year and, although Jonti Hobday’s Suzuki heads the series, the number of contenders aiming to dislodge him from the top is growing all the time. Local riders Peter Baker (from West Winch, near King’s Lynn) will be aiming to get on the rostrum at a track he is very familiar with. The Norfolk-based rider is the current New Era Pro-Bike champion, and is no stranger to winning the big capacity classes. Now that Suffolk-based Martin Buckles has got his bike working well though, he has become a definite rider to watch out for. Ely schoolboy Craig Morley has every opportunity of breaking the stranglehold that Luke Jones and Robbie Stewart have on the 125 Superteen Championship, which is only for riders between the ages of 13 and 19 years. Morley is currently 15 points behind Stewart and a further 11 off Jones, so it’s still all to play for. Championship leader Lee Dickenson sat out the last round of the Bikesport News GP 250 championship, and may do the same at Snetterton. He managed to maintain his lead at Silverstone, however, as a number of mishaps affected the rest. Tim and Tristan Reeves, current leaders of the FIM World Sidecar Championship, have also established a lead in the national Yokohama Super Sidecar Championship, thanks to the way teams can enter both championships. Local competition comes from the Diss Accident Repair Centre teams of ShaunMcVaigh/Wayne Stevens and Mike Copsey/Travey McVaigh, who are bound to be on the pace, as are the Cambridge/Thetford crew of Noel Durham and Karl Mumford. Beccles teenager Matt Bond is placed fourth in the Dyna Pro MiniTwins series, despite crashing out of the last round. At his home circuit though, he could easily overhaul Gary Polden, Graham English and Bob Collins, due to the closeness of the points situation. Tickets for this weekend’s MRO Powerbike event cost £12 per adult per day, with children aged 12 and under free. Free parking and paddock access is also available.
