NICK SANDERS HITS HALF WAY POINT ON RECORD BREAKING JOURNEY
28 June 2005 - Bennetts
Bennetts, the UK’s number one for motorcycle insurance, is still backing motorbike adventurer Nick Sanders to make it around the world in less than 20 days and set a new world record for the fastest solo land circumnavigation of the globe, despite slipping a day behind schedule at the half-way point.
Nick Sanders has reached Christchurch, New Zealand and surpassed the half-way point of his 20,000 mile epic journey around the world having fallen 1000 miles behind schedule on the poor roads and unpredictable obstacles of India and Asia. The Bennetts backed racer is now riding up to 1100 miles a day in a bid to claw back some of that deficit, clocking up 18 hours a day on his unmodified 2005 Yamaha R1 in pursuit of the record. Personal sponsor Bennetts is planning a hero’s welcome for the intrepid motorbike explorer when he crosses the finish line in London next month, in recognition of his mammoth achievement. Bennetts Director, Kal Samra, said: “We all wish Nick the very best of luck for the second half of his journey. Everyone at Bennetts is still confident Nick can beat the clock and claim that new record and we’ll continue to back him all the way to the finish line.” Nick Sanders is attempting to blaze a trail around the world in less than 19 days, 8 hours and 25 minutes to claim back the title he first captured in 1997, when he completed the journey in 31 days. To do so, Nick will have to average more than 1,000 miles a day and ride an average of 16 hours a day carrying only the essential equipment. Nick is not using any GPS Satellite Navigation on his journey, he is not carrying food or first aid and he won’t even have the luxury of a change of clothes. There’s also no support team to rely on, making this record attempt truly unique. Bennetts has been behind Nick’s record attempt since day one, providing the vital support that enabled Nick to cross the start line in pursuit of this record. The Bennetts Babes were also on hand at the start line to wish Nick ‘Bon Voyage’ on his epic journey. Bike fans can follow Nick’s progress around the world at www.motochallenge.com
