KALLIO SECOND FASTEST AT ASSEN
23 June 2005 - KTM-Sportmotorcycles AG
Red Bull KTM rider Mika Kallio has qualified a close second on the provisional grid for Saturday’s Dutch TT at Assen.
It was a tight battle against Aprilia rival Mattia Pasini with Kallio just missing the top position by three thousandths of a second. Both riders set their fastest times on the 12th and final lap of the first qualifying session. Conditions were warm and humid with an air temperature of 34 degrees, a departure from the often cool and wet conditions at Assen. Spanish teenager Julian Simon was fifth fastest on the second row of the grid for the Red Bull KTM squad with an impressive performance on the fast 5.9 km track Hungarian Gabor Talmacsi was out of the top ten in twelfth despite a big effort to improve his time late in the session. As the chequered flag came out Talmacsi set off on his flying lap which would have been fast enough for eighth on the grid. However Talmacsi had crossed the finish line a fraction of a second late and his time did not count for the provisional grid. Talmacsi had been fastest in the morning free practice session and is looking for a better performance in tomorrow’s final qualifying session. Red Bull ADAC KTM Junior team rider Michael Ranseder set the 20th fastest time and is looking to build his confidence on the fast and difficult Assen circuit. MIKA KALLIO #36 - Second - 2’12.745 “That was a very good session for me and the times are close, I’m second by just 0.003 off pole position. The engine feels very strong here and the only small problem I have is some chattering at the rear in a couple corners at the end of the lap. “ JULIAN SIMON #60 - Fifth - 2’13.403 “I tried for a faster time on my final lap but I hit a lot of traffic, I never had a clear run. But otherwise everything is going well, the bike and tyres feel good and I have a comfortable set-up for this track.” GABOR TALMACSI #14 - Twelfth - 2’14.226 “My final lap was much faster but it didn’t count, I didn’t realise I had crossed the chequered flag before I started the lap. I’m not happy because everything feels OK and I’m pushing hard but I cannot produce the lap times. I have tested a lot of tyres for the race but there seems to be little difference between them. ” MICHAEL RANSEDER #76 - Twentieth - 2’15.126 “I’m still finding my rhythm and ideal set-up for this track. The bike improved from the morning practice session and I was more comfortable this afternoon. I need to brake later and have more killer instinct to attack and go faster.” ENDS
