POWERCUP ON THE FAST TRACK
25 June 2005 - BMW Motorrad GB

Holland’s Circuit Van Drenthe will be brought to life this weekend as international racing rivals battle it out for maximum points in the third round of the BMW Motorrad PowerCup at Assen.

One of motorsport’s most atmospheric circuits, Assen was purpose-built in 1954 for the Dutch TT and underwent two major alterations in 1984 and 2005. This means that PowerCup riders will have to quickly master the fast, flowing track with its proliferation of high-speed corners and sudden changes of direction. What better venue for riders to push BMW’s four-cylinder muscle machine to the maximum?

Today, the demanding Assen circuit is more than 6.1km in length – an impressive statistic that adds to the track’s prestigious and intimidating reputation as the longest track on the racing calendar. Renowned for its festive and extravagant atmosphere with thousands of racing enthusiasts packing the 65,000 capacity grandstand each year, Assen will certainly provide the biggest challenge yet to the riders and BMW’s 175 bhp K1200 R race machines.

After two rounds (out of seven) Belgian rider Stčphane Mertens will have high hopes of a race-wining performance following a disappointing fourth place in Italy earlier this month. However, the series leader board shows that Mertens still leads the title chase on 38 points thanks to a victory in the BMW PowerCup opening round at Le Mans. Yet, with just two points between Mertens and contenders Sergio Fuertes (Spain) and Roberto Panichi (Italy) the third round is set to become a clash of nations.

VIP guest racers will once again form part of the grid and fans can look forward to seeing journalist Randy van der Wal (Netherlands), former racer John Bakker (Netherlands), and Italian guest rider Jürgen Fuchs – a rival of Valentino Rossi in the 250cc race in 1998.

As a support event, prior to MotoGP, race action from the third round of BMW Motorrad’s PowerCup will take place at 11.15am on Saturday 25 June.
